NYC teachers...New mandate for reporting child abuse
Edited to fix title...
Were you spoken to about this new mandate yet? We are required to now make that call ourselves and also give out our home phone number or cell phone number when reporting it?

What??????????? No, I didn't hear about it but that is friggin ridiculous!!! First of all, think about how many teachers will not report because they might fear for their own lives???

WE had a meeting about this the other day...I was like so the parent can now find out who reported it and the guidance counselor said no they can't..BS you think they won't find out and my life won't be threatened...
There will be a lot of people not reporting anymore

On top of my previous post, it's also more than just a phone call that goes into it. This is a lot more work!

Re: NYC teachers...New mandate for reporting child abuse
I am on LI, but I am the building reporter in my school. Techically, the reporter is to remain confidential.
However, every report made by school staff has to also have a written report. The family is ENTITLED to read the narrative on that written report.
So if I write "student reported to school social worker"
or "student told nurse that..."
they know!! I have parents yelling at me all the time!!!

Re: NYC teachers...New mandate for reporting child abuse
This isn't just for NYC - we were told at our first faculty meeting now that teachers are mandated primary reporters as well. I can no longer go through our school contact person. However, they suggested that we still sit with the (old) mandated reporter and have them help us through the calling process.
This is not something I want to be doing.

this is interesting. FH is a school psych and he does all the reporting.. im going to ask him about this. But knowing his district he will still be the reporter.

Re: NYC teachers...New mandate for reporting child abuse
We had the meeting as well, but we were told not to give our home phone number...just to give the school number and once the school got the initial report # they would take the phone calls if we weren't available.
