NYS disability and company STD
i'm pretty sure i know the answer to this but i just want to make sure i'm not going to miss any benefits...
my company provides short term disability pay for 6 or 8 weeks for the birth of a child. does this mean i can't qualify for the NYS short term disability of $170/week? are state benefits only for people who do not receive any maternity pay from their employers?

ooo that's good to hear! not that i'll be retiring early with the extra $170/week, but it's better than not getting it! and since i will have some weeks unpaid, i'd like to get any extra i can. did you just apply directly to the state or did your employer help you with the NYS part? my employer has not given me any paperwork pertaining to NYS disability, but my employer is based in a different state so i sometimes doubt their knowledge of NY.

I received both but, they deducted the NY state amount from the amount they gave me so I got the same total amount I would have gotten if I wasn't eligible for NY disability - not extra. It reduces the amount your company pays you.
My company referred me to the provider and I worked directly with them - our company used Cigna and they directly sent me a check (the first pregnancy I got a lump sum but, I was paid weekly the second pregnancy).
Just an FYI - if your company doesn't deduct the NY state piece from the total disability right away, they may still do it later on (happened to me - almost a year after DS 1 they took the $856 out of my paycheck with only a little warning). For my second pregnancy they deducted it weekly so there wasn't a large hit later on.

You don't get your company one plus the 170. They deduct the 170 from the company one.
I got 2 separate checks. Totaled what my company gives.

I should say I didn't get 100% pay from my company it was something like 66%. I got two lump sum checks one for what my company pays and one for std. Also my company only pays anything extra if you are a certain level otherwise it's only the $170 a week from nys.
