NYS/International Cord Blood Donation

A friend of mine donated her cord blood to the national cord blood bank. She said that she is able to get the cord blood back if she needs it and it is still available. And, if it is not available she will get the cord blood from the closest match. I was trying to read about it online, but I don't see anything about being able to obtain the blood if needed. Has anyone researched this?

Well, I know about the cord blood programs that you pay for, but my friend told me that the International Cord Blood Donation is a donation. She didn't have to pay for anything.

Re: NYS/International Cord Blood Donation

So that means you donate your cord to this bank...but you don’t necessarily get your own cord back if you have a problem and need it??? I am confused and would prefer my own cord back Chat Icon

Re: NYS/International Cord Blood Donation

I looked into this a bit, but my hospital, Winthrop, doesn't allow you to donate. Check with your hospital.

This is the site I was looking at and I didn't see anything about being able to obtain your own cord blood back if needed. Am I missing it?

ETA: Found it!!:

What if a family donates cord blood and the baby or some other family member needs a transplant at some time in the future?
When cord blood is donated to the NCBP, it will be made available to any patient who might need it. Availability for the infant or another family member, therefore, cannot be guaranteed. To date, about 2,000 cord blood units donated to the NCBP have been sent for transplants: 1-5% of the 25,000 units donated so far have been transplanted within 5 years of donation; 20% of units donated 10 years ago have been used. A few units (less than 1%) have been used for research purposes or to validate and monitor the quality of our operations. Note: With federal funding and increased inventory of donated cord blood units nationwide, these percentages may decrease over time because so many more units will be available. Or, if new uses for cord blood are found, the percent used may increase.

If the cord blood has not yet been used for a patient or for research purposes, the child who donated the cord blood, or another family member, can have it.

Re: NYS/International Cord Blood Donation

My OB said that they (participating hospitals) should automatically ask you if you wish to donate to a national cord blood bank. LIJ does - or at least that's the procedure as told to us.

Re: NYS/International Cord Blood Donation

I looked into it too but the hospital I'm going to doesn't do it. My Dr said public storage is very expensive so many hospitals don't do it.
