NYSAA
Has anyone that is doing it this year taken a look or gone to the training? I went to the training today, and while I don't think the changes are hard, I am a little nervous about some of the tasks that we need to do! I know my students can't do a lot of this...or atleast certain tasks! And I am afraid they are just going to be made to feel inferior. So sad!!!

I haven't gone to the training yet but I'm terrified! I have a student in 6th grade who cannot count. Did the train give any good resources?

I haven't gone to training yet but I have heard that there are not many tasks in some grade levels/subjects that would be appropriate for my population. I also heard there were no sample assessment tasks which would have helped guide the way. We shall see!!

Nassau BOCES is giving a training next week that I was asked to attend. I hope it's helpful! I have four kids to assess this year and the thought of it makes me cringe. The paperwork has gotten out of control.

I went to the training on Tuesday. It's horrible. Most of the tasks are ridiculous-and if my students could do them they wouldn't be Alternately Assessed!

Not really. They just went over the new requirements. I started making a few of my tasks this weekend. I am going to be overwhelmed this year!!

After sitting through the training today, it seems like it is going to be a lot of work and frustration on the student's end. My frustration with the whole change is that the level of complexity will be used as a weight of their overall score. The students that are in my class are there because they require a life skills curriculum and not a modified general education curriculum. For many of my students, the less complex tasks are still going to be challenging for them and, because of that, their score may be impacted. I will follow the guidelines and administer tasks that are most appropriate for them, based on the limited choices given. This is going to be a frustrating testing period!

Does anyone know of any resources that you can see samples of tasks? The only examples I have seen are of older students. I am so worried about doing it wrong!

The assessment tasks are very specific and the directions must be exactly as written in the frameworks. For this reason it's almost impossible to just find what you need on the web. Easier to just make up your own worksheets but make sure the directions are exactly as stated. This whole thing is really a test of a teachers ability to follow the ridiculous directives of the state- if I make an error it can result in a no score for the student.  How foolish is that? Such a waste of time.

I teach secondary and am having trouble coming up with some assessments, especially for math, that are appropriate for my students and are able to be implemented.

I completely agree. One of the lowest tasks for a math secondary task is to develop a function table. I had to google what that even meant. I am not sure why my 18 year old students with disabilities need to know what a function table is, or when they will even utilize it in the future!

You can make a modified function table- it's doesnt have to be algebra. It can be simple addition. I had to google this too!
Is anyone working with secondary cognitively impaired students? My kids function at about a 3rd/4th grade level and I have all my worksheets. Happy to share.

Me me!!! I actually completed all my math tasks except the histogram one. I didn't use the one with the function table, I actually used the one with positive and negative slope. I figure it is a 50/50 chance and I can teach them if the end points up it is positive and if the end points down it is negative. My social studies and science tasks I am just modifying a little from what I have done in previous years. It is the English tasks that are killing me (minus the spelling/capitalization one). I stay far away from data sheets because I think it is really hard to task analyze and now I know for the speaking task I have to do a data sheet.
I would be happy to share all of mine as well!

we took a few right from the training manuael. All the samples they use are secondary.
This whole process is RIDICULOUS!!!!! None of my students are doing any of this math, they are still learning $$.
The assessment should be based on their IEP goals, not geomentric shapes and solving equations

What English task is killing you? I am using critical text (main idea) the graphic organizer and the explicit claim. (plus the capitalization and one data sheet.)
