oak kitchen cabinets??
What do you think of oak cabinets. I jsut moved ino my new house and we were not originalyl planning on doing anything to the cabinets, they are nearly BRAND new and the kitchend has a lot of space but as I've been reading supposedly oak is outdated which kind of surprises me a little but I guess I am jsut not up on my kitchen deisgns, LOL! Anyway so now DH and I are wondering if we should have them painted white--and incur more cost--we were jsut going to do contertops....thoughts, anyone have oak cabinets?

Re: oak kitchen cabinets??
we had oak cabinets in our first apt and they were really outdated...i hated them....
my parents on the other hand had oak cabinets put in their new construction house and theirs look great. not dated at all...
so i think it has to do with the cabinet shape, height, trims, knobs etc. and not just the wood itself...

Re: oak kitchen cabinets??
I wouldn't incur the extra cost of refinishing the cabinets unless you are unhappy with them. And by unhappy I mean that the people who live in your home feel that they are unattractive or not functional.
I don't really follow 'trends' to be honest. There are plenty of things that are 'hot' that are just.. not my style.
Since you were happy with the cabinets before hearing they were 'out of style' - I'd keep them and save money to work on projects that will really improve YOUR enjoyment of your new home!

Does what other people say about them bother you because you are thinking of resale value? If so, there are a bunch of kitchen painting re-dos that I've seen doing google searches, usually to white, where you can see for yourself if it will make an improvement.
If it's just for aesthetics, I'd do what makes you happy, even if that means doing nothing.

Good answer.. I assumed that since it was a new house you were planning on staying for a long time - but if you are looking to sell or flip then that's a different story altogether!

Re: oak kitchen cabinets??
I think it really depends on type of oak, the stain, etc..
If it's a light/natural oak, those are pretty basic and you can dress them up w/ fun hardware.. I wouldn't paint oak b/c oak has a lot of grain and you'd see the grain through the paint... I'm not a huge fan of painted oak, but that's probably just the cabinet maker coming out in me (we use maple for painting since the figure- or grain- is pleasant, and thus, lends itself to painting).
Last year we redid a kitchen and the customer used 1/4 sawn white oak and it came out beautifully! It's all about personal preference.
Unless you hate hate hate the cabinets or the cabinets are flakeboard/falling apart, I'd leave it alone.

And next year they may be back "in".. I wouldn't touch them unless you are unhappy with them.

Re: oak kitchen cabinets??
I never thought that a wood could be outdated, the style of a cabinet maybe, like the oak cabinets you see in original 1970s kitchens - definitely, LOL. I have oak cabinets that are oversized. When I redid my kitchen I kept the cabinets sine they were put it less than 10 years before. I did, however, change out the hardware. You can look into stripping them and then staining them to another color, but it will be costly. I have looked into a faux paint that can be done in different colors, styles and variations, the possiblities with this technique are endless and not nearly as expensive as refinishing. I you're interested let me know, I can give you the name of the company.

Re: oak kitchen cabinets??
Can you post pictures of the cabinets- I find it hard to believe that the wood type is what makes it out of date- you may be able to do a cheapie fix like switching the hardware to update it and be happier with it- but post them the girls on here are amazing and will help!
