Obama says 'Palin's family off-limits'

interesting...

Story Highlights
Barack Obama responds to Gov. Sarah Palin's daughter's pregnancy

"People's families are off-limits ... children are especially off-limits," he says

Obama says reporters should "back off these kinds of stories"

Bristol Palin, a senior in high school, is about five months pregnant

MONROE, Michigan (CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama said firmly that families are off-limits in the campaign for president, reacting to news that GOP running mate Sarah Palin's 17-year-old daughter is pregnant.

"Let me be as clear as possible," Obama said. "I think people's families are off-limits, and people's children are especially off-limits. This shouldn't be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin's performance as governor or her potential performance as a vice president."

Obama said reporters should "back off these kinds of stories" and noted that he was born to an 18-year-old mother.

CNN story

I give him a LOT of credit for this!

I really like his response to this and the whole story really hits home for me.
I was an unwed teenage mother, if my son were running for the presidency of the US & he was asked about this topic regarding his opponent, I'd hope to god he would have enough respect & appreciation for me and our situation to say its not important to the campaign.
What an insult it would be to his mother if he handled it any differently.
Not to mention he has two daughters that will be teens if he serves a two terms as president, I'm sure as hell he thought about the possibility of one of them being exploited in a less than desirable situation and how that would make them feel.

Well, of course the damage is done and he's probably jumping around in circles in his home somewhere with joy over this. BUT, lesser people wouldn't have said this. He has little kids of his own, I'm sure he absolutely does mean this.

While I'm sure he means what he said, especially given the fact his mother had him at a young age, I am SURE he and many, many other democrats are smiling about this.......I do think it was classy for him to go on the record like that though although I'm not an Obama fan AT ALL.....

I'm not an Obama supporter, and although I agree with PP that the damage is already done and Obama and other democrats are probably secretly thrilled about this, I do have to say that I'm very impressed with his comments.

Although none of the candidates thrill me, I'm glad to see he made these comments. Although, how could he really criticize, I'm sure if he had, it would have come out that his mother had him at 18.

I do think he is a class act in general, and this only proves it. He has asked the media to lay off of his own wife and children, so I think it's fair that he's asking them to do the same for Palin.

Raised an interesting point too that his mother had him when she was only 18.

I don't think any parent, at their core, would be thrilled about the hardships another parent would face unless they were a thirsty blood sucking vampire...and then they wouldn't even bother commenting to the media about anything being "off limits"

his point is 10000000000000% correct. GOBAMA!
