Obedience training?

My dog is only 12 Weeks old, and I'm not sure when I will be able to start Obedience training
Is it better to get a person to come to your house, or go to a class with other dogs.
Any info would help, I'm clueless!!

We were going to do the onoe on one training but we decided to go with a trainer in west babylon in a group class. I think it wa the best decision we ever made. It taught Porter how to behave in the house and with other dogs. He just graduated from teh intermediate class this weekend.

I'm guessing I have to wait until she has all her shots first. How many times a week did your dog go and for how long? Also, around how much did it cost? Thanks!!

Yes i would wait for all of her shots. We went once a week on a saturday. It was 7 weeks of training for the beginners class. She went through EVERYTHING with us. Walking on a leash, sit, stay, down, how to control your dog to behave in public places, and so much more. These are all things that have to be put into practice at home as well as in class. I believe it was $350 for the beginners class. Then we decided to do the intermediate class which was 120.00. That was only for 4 weeks. I went from a 65Lb dog that would drag me on his walks to the most well behaved dog on a leash. He no longer pulls me and when there are other dominant dogs around, i learned how to control him. We are still working but the classes were amazing. Very helpful.

We Interviewed a few other trainers but they used the collar that i do not like. I guess that shock collar it was. Then we went to Toni's and she does everything by AKC standards. We spoke to some of the other people in her class and they all had good things to say about her. I think it was the best decision we made to put Porter in these classes

We are using Best Friends dog Training. They come to your house, then you go to group classes, so its a little bit of both.

They use a training collar. The collar has been a life saver.

I have a story about BF. DH and I used them and I just want to warn you. First off, we did the 2 week board and train due to our work schedules at the time. I was against it, and I regret it, but the Dh and I argued and I gave in. My first problem was my dog came home with kennel cough. I spent over a month calling them daily with concerns and questions before I enrolled Brody. The secretary Sharon just kept telling me to make sure Brody had his vaccinations, which he did. According to our vet at the time, who said hed see us next year. When we dropped Brody off, they tell us the vet papers show he never had bordetella. We shrug our shoulders, not knowing what that was. The kid tells us no biggie, their vet will do it. OK,we say. DUH! Not realizing that you cant vaccinate and then expose the dog right to the hazard immediately. We know better now,and if you visit the website you will see that it now stresses that your dog must have bordetella, thats due to my complaint, thank you!
My next peeve was that the whole 2 weeks my dog was there, he was trained by a "training apprentice". I didnt pay them 1500 dollars so they could use my dog in helping them train their apprentices! I wanted a trainer, assisted by an apprentice for that amount of money. My dog left there not knowing all the commands they promised. He never learned "place", and they never look him out in public like the mall or park. he still jumps up in people and he still pulls on the leash. I never took him to the class because all those dogs are so much better behaved. They all sit on a box until they are told to move. My dog is great, dont get me wrong. He is great around the house. He is friendly and just wants to play with anything and everyone be it a dog, baby, kid or adult, or a sock! But he is a big dog, a Bullmastiff who is 115 pounds, he needs more training, which brings my next complaint. They promise follow up lessons in the home after you pick your dog up. We never heard a peep from them since we drove away with our visibly ill dog. Not until I finally complained a few months later and they sent the same apprentice to my home. We originally were not going to use them due to the shock collar, but that part works great! Its all the other stuff that I was not happy with
How is your training going? who is the trainer?

Puppy kindergarten starts from 4-8 months of age. I HIGHLY recommend Doggie UK9 in Bay Shore, I believe their classes are $130 for the course, not sure-
I had the pleasure of meeting one of their trainers named Rolissa at a dog seminar, and I was VERY impressed- very very knowledgeable re. being the pack leader-
Their website is doggieuk9.com

Thanks for the info!! That is horrible what happened to you. That was a lot of money, for still having a dog that is not fully trained.
I don't have a trainer yet. Right now I'm trying to train her a little bit. I may just get some private lessons for now.

Re: Obedience training?

i'd recommend you start bringing your dog to those classes. you're dog might not be trained like you thought because he wasn't continuing his training through those classes. they're very helpful. we were thinking of doing the training there. we went and looked at the class and was surprised how well trained those dogs are.

You are right, I should (and will ) being Brody to the classes, but I was afraiod because he is still so rambunctious! But, yes we do plan to work more with him. He is a great dog but he has to learn to stay put when we tell him to, etc...BF staff was very nice, and I like that once you use them you are a lifetime member, but I think that they lacked communication in some areas.

Re: Obedience training?

We are actually starting our puppy in the group class at Petco, then we will most likely have someone come to the house for private classes. As long as your puppy has had their first set of shots they can take the class.

We took our pup at 4 mths, once he had all his shots, to a training class at Petco. It was mostly to have fun, learn and have him socialize with other dogs.

Then when we got our second pup, we had a trainer come to the house for about 8 visits, so we worked with him solo then.

Re: Obedience training?

I brought Loki to Petsmart. I think he only had to have the bordatella and the rabies, but call them to make sure. The training was reasonably priced and pretty good for a group class. The main thing is to do your homework. If you do not reinforce the classes at home then the techniques will not work.

Many people have also recommended Bark Busters and Mutt Manners for in-home training. I might need to do this for Fascinus, b/c ever since we were robbed he barks incessantly. This is an issue b/c he now wakes up DS 4 -5 times a day.

Yes 2 years ago May 1st. I'll never forget. I was supposed to be at work but I had a bad MVP spell the day before so I went for a quick EKG. I came home & they were still in the house. I scared them off & thank god they did not let my dogs outChat Icon

Re: Obedience training?

We just signed up at Quail Run Kennels in Medford-I have a 7 month old pit puppy and a 2 1/2 year old pit (we decided not to bring our 7 year old pit). It costs $200 per dog, and we have been going for the past 3 weeks, the guy seems a little rough, but I feel when you are training a pit, you have to be a little rough (we arent beating them either, we are just being firm)-I think it is working great so far and we are in a class of about 15-20 other dogs so they arte learning to listen with destractions. It is an hour long and we also practice with them at home alot. I am seeing improvement and they allow people to come any time and watch as the class is going on before they sign up their own dog.
Good luck!

Re: Obedience training?

We traiined Scout with Best Friends and have been very happy with them and their staff. He was trained by Frank (the owner) and Chris. We don't take him to group class enough but he is still very good.

I am boarding Scout there next week, so I will be sure to get the bortadella NOW. Unfortunately Kennel Cough is easily transmitted and so common, but that is a shame that they didn't respond better to you and your concerns.

Lucky you! Frank is great, Chris is also, I met him when I sat in on a class and went for a tour before I enrolled Brody. We had Derrick, who is a great guy, but an apprentice, even though Frank swears he is as good as all the other trainers. I like that they let you attend for life and I still want my dog to be trained in a public place and learn his "place" command. They promise your dog will come home trained "off-leash"..no way. My dog wont run away, but he certainly wont walk calmly by my side if i take him to a park or walk him down the street. He would be all over the place. We live on a dirt road in the woods so we let him out to roam alone without fear of him being in traffic, but he really doesnt get out in public enough where there are crowds. I took him to PetSmart for the first time a few weeks ago and he ws pulling me all over, luckily I had the collar and kept him pretty much in check. Thanks!
