Odd topic, but did you know you shouldn't really go to the Holtsville Ecology Center on cloudy days?

My friend was just telling me that her FIL helped build the ecology center and it's built on an old landfill, and on sunny days, the gasses from the landfill just dissipate, but on overcast days, they linger and are harmful to your health. I wonder how much truth there is to that?Chat Icon She wasn't sure if it was true or not, but her FIL told her that and so she passed the info onto me. Anyone know anything about that?Chat Icon

It did used to be a landfill, but I think they have MANY standards on how long you have to wait before you can build something there and then they conduct lots of tests and such.

I know that it was built on an old landfill but i would have to think they had tests and standards for everything to be there.

I guess her FIL was trying to make the point that it's not as safe as it seems? I don't know, I mean, the animals all live there and seem to be fine, right? I really don't know what the answer is, just thought it was interesting.

I never heard that. I would think it would have been checked out though, but with all the clusters we have, you never know.Chat Icon

I don't know too much about it, but I am pretty sure that parks, etc. built on old landfills have venting systems to make sure that this doesn't happen.

The sunny day vs. cloudy day thing doesn't really make sense. Its not like gasses evaporate in the sun....

My guess is that that park is SAFER than other parks. Because of the landfill issue, the Health department is probably checking it out on a regular basis. How many other parks do you think get monitored for off-gassing? I'm guessing none....

If it's overcast, that means there are clouds a few hundred feet in the sky. If the gasses somehow defy the laws of nature, then I guess it's a possibility, but we rarely have zero wind, and hundreds of feet are plenty of space to dissipate any possible gas that may be coming off.

The logical side of me absolutely agrees with all of you. I just find it interesting that someone who builds the parks thinks they're so unhealthy. KWIM?

I would say occasional visits can't harm you. Living on it, and working daily on it, that would totally concern me.

Now that i think about it, actually I think it does make sense.

I saw a news story about how China (I believe) is very polluted b/c it is often very overcast and the cloud cover blocks gasses/pollution/car exhaust, fumes from buildings, etc, down lower to the environment.

They did a whole story on this, about how terrible it is for breathing, etc due to the cloud cover and the busy city. So they started limiting how often people could use their vehicles, etc.

Dont quote me on this, but that's the gist. I will see if I can pull up the article.

So yes, cloud cover does make total sense.

I understand what you're saying, but the cloud cover and amount of pollution in China's cities cannot compare to the holtsville ecology center. And thats a smog issue, which we do not have on LI.
I understand why you made the reference, but its like comparing apples to oranges.
