off shoot from decking: TOXIC pressure treated lumber
I felt compelled to write this after reading a deck estimate thread
FYI for everyone.....
I'd avoid some types of pressure-treated lumber.... I am fairly sure it will be as popular as asbestos tiles or chlordane in 15 years.
The commonly found version of weather-proof lumber is treated with an arsenic compound (CCA). Believe it or not, this compound actually transfer to your hands when you touch the wood.... even if the deck is 15 years old!
From what I've heard, new types of pressure-treated lumber do not have this compound. However, I believe it's still legal to sell and make the CCA-lumber... so make sure the lumber you get doesn't have CCA. Also, virtually ALL pressure treated lumber used to be (2004 and earlier) of this toxic variety.
Don't handle the wood without gloves, don't let your kids touch it or sit on it, and get rid of it if you can!

Yes. I had read about this when we were researcing how to build raised vegetable garden boxes.
We went with cedar and will let it age naturally...probably will have to replace it in 7-10 eyars.

I bet it is that + the fact that it has all these toxic water sealers and stains applied to it.

That's exactly why you can't burn old deck wood...
