Officer attacked in Southampton bar on life-support
this is so sad, it doesn't look like he'll make it...

An off-duty Suffolk County correction officer was on life-support in extremely critical condition Thursday, after he was strangled while working a second job as a bouncer at a Southampton Village bar, police said.
Andrew Reister, 40, a correction officer for 14 years, was working at the Publick House in Southampton early Thursday morning when one of the patrons, Anthony Oddone, 25, of Farmingville, became unruly and climbed on top of a table, police said.
"He's creating a disturbance and Mr. Reister asks him to get off," said Suffolk Homicide Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick. "Some words are exchanged, and then they end up on the floor wrestling. Mr. Oddone gets Mr. Reister in a headlock and chokes him unconscious, and then continues to choke while a number of people are telling him to stop.
"When he won't, they try to pry him off, but he continues for a significant time choking Mr. Reister, and when he finally lets go he flees," he said.
Southampton Village police arrested Oddone about a mile from the Publick House and charged him with first-degree assault. Those charges may change based on Reister's medical condition, police said.
"The medical personnel are saying his prospects for survival are negligible," Fitzpatrick said.
Oddone, who told police that he is a caddie master at The Bridge private golf course in Bridgehampton, was arraigned Thursday on the assault charge in Southampton Village Justice Court, where Judge Michael Solomon ordered him held on $500,000 cash bail.
Vito Dagnello, president of the Suffolk County Correction Officer's Association, who visited Reister at Stony Brook University Medical Center, said, "He wouldn't be working a second job to support his family if we had a contract."
Suffolk correction officers have worked without a contract and no raise since 2003, he said.
County Executive Steve Levy said through a spokesman, "It is despicable that a union boss would use this officer's tragedy for political purposes. This time should be reserved for praying for this officer and his family."
Reister is the married father of two children, ages 8 and 4, Dagnello said.
Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco, who visited Reister, said he is an exemplary officer who heads the correction officers benevolent association that raises money to help families of officers in need.

i am having so much trouble understanding this. a 25-year-old man has not only ruined his own life, but the lives of so many others, and all because he got too drunk???
even if this CO survives, what kind of condition will he be in? and what about his kids, and his wife... this is so senseless. 
i love the unnecessary comment from Vito Dagnello, president of the Suffolk County Correction Officer's Association: "He wouldn't be working a second job to support his family if we had a contract."   true or not, who says something like that?? like it's the county's fault this azzhole decided to choke a CO to death. if Reister hadn't been working, someone else would have.

so scary! and it could happen to any bouncer
I am so glad my DH finally stopped working out there
he has been shot at
he was stabbed- but managed to jump back and suck in his gut - his leather Jacket has a hole (good thing it was winter)
hit by a car (not Lizzie Guman- he wishes $$$)
all this for about $100- $150 a night
this poor guy hope he pulls thru

its just soo sad how people cant control themselves and just walk away from a fight. This poor young man now has to fight for his life while that punk walks.

I hope this kid gets locked up and they thow anyway the key. As far as I am concerned he is a crazy deranged out of control M'ther f'er!!!
This is hitting home for me b/c my next door neighbor passed out, fell, broke his neck and went unconscious. He died and left behind his wife and 3 young children. That was a very fre*ak accident. It was less than a year ago and I still think about him everyday.
In this situation, it's murder.
MMMMMMMURDER!!!!!!!!!!!!He killed him. He took his life and destoyed dozens of lives as well. These poor kids.
He better be doing hard time. No sympathy from me.
I would love to spit in Mr. punk as$ Oddone's face compliments from the children who will no longer have their father.
Can you tell I'm mad? I'm shaking right now!
ETA: Why oh why didn't anyone do anything??? What has this world com to? You mean to tell me NO ONE helped this man???????? I don't understand. No one... nothing.

Just heard that he passed on after taking him off life support...that poor family
eta - I wanted to add also that what I heard was that the man that attacked him was a Marine... so he knew EXACTLY what he was doing by choking him.... and also apparently he had a friend with him that wasn't letting anyone stop the fight

What a sad story. This man was a friend of my dad's. A good man with young children. From what I read on various websites, there were people (including his friends) who were trying to pry the guy off of him but they were unable to.
I hope that the SOB that did this gets the death penalty or life in prison with no parole
