Officially scared out of my mind!

Well, it looks like Baby boy Chat Icon is going to make an early appearance....MUCH earlier than planned.

I was in L & D on Monday night with contractions about 8-10min apart on the fetal monitor. The doc on-call from my OB's office didn't think it was important for him to come to the hospital to check me out and told me to come back on Tuesday morning to be checked. So, I went to the office on Tue at 1pm (as he instructed me to) and I was told that they couldn't "squeeze" me in until 3....but I had to go to work. So, after a long argument with the receptionist, I left and told her to keep my appointment for today (Friday at 3:45).

Well, turns out I'm going to have this baby A LOT sooner than I planned. I'm 50% effaced and 1cm dilated and still having pretty consistent contractions. I am scared sh!tless!!! I have nothing ready at my house, his father just started to have his mental breakdown about having a baby for "real" last week---so he's no help (and he just started dating a new girl who's super jealous---great timing on his part), and I have no idea what the heck to do. To top it all off, he's now BREECH which means if I go into full labor, I'm going to need a c-section---meaning even more time off of work between the NICU for him to grow strong and big and time to recover for me. ARRRGHGHGHGGHGG!!!! I have no money, limited clothes for this baby, no diapers, and just have no idea what to do.

The doc sent me to get a Betamethasone shot today and I have to get another one tomorrow to help develop baby boy's lungs. And this all just became VERY real to me about 2 hours ago. I'm only 31 weeks. I can only hope that he decides to stay in there for at least another 4 weeks....but according to the NICU nurse and the doc, I'll probably go into full labor in the next week or two, if not sooner.

Oh boy! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Try not to worry too much though because you can never really tell how things will progress. When I was 34 wks with DD I was having contractions 5 min apart and was 100% effaced and 1cm dilated - they all thought I would not last a week. At 38 weeks I was induced and had not progressed any further so you never know!

Really? Oh my....you just completely put my mind at ease!!! I've really been freaking out since I got home. I have no baby furniture, nowhere to put the clothes that I do have for him, no diapers, nothing.....the things I do have are all just sitting in bags in his room! I keep telling myself that he can definitely stay in there for a while longer, but with the constant contractions, the increased pooping (sorry, I know...TMI), and the overall "blah" feeling, I just know he's coming early. BUT, since you told me you went another 4 weeks at 100% effacement---I feel MUCH better now. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I think it's just the fact that the doc made me go for the Beta shot that sent me into overload. Hopefully now I'll relax a bit.

I knew I could count on you ladies to calm me down a bit....nothing better than hearing it from BTDT Mom's to make everything better. Chat Icon My Mom has been trying to tell me the same things for the last couple of hours, but she had her baby 31 years ago----things were MUCH different then. Beta injections didn't even exist then!!! lol

Logically, I know I could be like this for weeks, and being in the medical profession myself---I KNOW I have to calm down and relax, but it's really hard to do right now. Hence, the reason I'm here!!! Chat Icon I was just figuring from the get-go that I'm a first-timer and would go later than my due date and many women do....giving me more time to prepare everything. But, the circumstances have suddenly changed and well, I freaked. lol I can't thank you all enough for giving me some of your own stories to help me relax a bit. You're all such a big help!!! I haven't really "freaked" about anything with this pregnancy till now....not the spotting, nor the cramping, nor the BH's, not even the excruciating back pain that sent me to physical therapy....but this put me over the edge. lol So, thanks for listening and letting me vent. I truly appreciate it. You ladies are the best!

Re: Officially scared out of my mind!

I was in the hospital for 4 days with preterm contractions. I got the steroid shots and they put me on procardia and finally sent me home on bedrest. I was 31 weeks. Here I am 4 weeks later and still no babies!! Did you have an FFN test?

I asked the doc about the test, but he said there was no reason to do it because he already knows I'm in pre-term labor based on my symptoms and the fact that I'm effacing and dilating. I've noticed that I've had very watery CM discharge (TMI, but just for visual sake--it literally drips out of me when I stand up from peeing), I've also been pooping at least twice a day (I usually go about once a week), and the obvious cramping, back pain, and contractions. So, he thought it was pointless to do the FFN because he already knows what the answer is. He also told me there's no point to "bedrest" at this point because if the cervix is going to continue to thin, it's going to do it whether I'm standing up or laying down. So, I'll be back to work on Sunday and will just hope that my little munchkin decides to stay in for a while longer. I was surprised that he didn't want to put me in the hospital for further monitoring and possible medications to stop the "laboring process", but maybe he isn't that concerned at this point? Who knows.....guess I'll find out soon enough. Assuming nothing major happens, I have a follow-up appointment in two weeks. So, I'll definitely keep everybody updated. The "good news" is that since I've been having these "real" contractions....they're really not the painful at all. I assume they get much worse once I'm fully dilated and get ready to push though.....lol

Try to remain calm a lot of times things don't progress as fast as you think. Many people dialatea 1or 2 cm and still have weeks before they go into labor.
Try and focus on getting whatever major necessities you need. Good luck!

I'm surprised your doctor didn't recommend bedrest. I know there is some controversy over whether or not it works, but I thought most doctors like to take the more conservative side. I am also surprised they didn't put you on any meds to try to stop the contractions - I was pretty much the same as you and they did all that for me. They told me 34 weeks was the cut off - that at 34 weeks they wouldn't do anything to stop labor.

Re: Officially scared out of my mind!

I just this... I think pretty much everyone has summed up what I would say as well.

I know A LOT of women, from when I did high risk maternal/fetal transports that were dilated with contractions MONTHS before they actually gave birth.

I have an Ultra relaxed midwife and I'm still a little shock they didn't reccomend bedrest or modified bedrest Chat Icon

Its a matter of simple gravity, the more you are standing and the more pressure on your cervix the faster it will thin out...

I know your situation is a bit complex. I reccomend that you try and sit as much as you can when you are at work and for the next few weeks take it easy and RELAX at home.... Time to delegate to people to help you out. The last thing you should be doing is running around like crazy trying to get everythign set-up......

HOpefully your Chat Icon willl cook a few more weeks and avoid a NICU or lengthy NICU stay.....

ALso, there is still a chance the baby will turn unless his hips have already "engaged" in your pelvis. You can loog into some natural ways of trying and turing him (yoga positions) and a whole lot of Chat Icon

There is still a chance you can go to term and the baby can turn!!!

Stay positive! You are almost there!!!

Re: Officially scared out of my mind!

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I just love you ladies. You all have really put my mind at ease quite a bit!!! Thank you!!!

The contractions are still coming at the same strength and same timing....so, nothing new to report this am. I've taken the day off from my normal "cleaning" day schedule at home and been trying to stay horizontal as much a possible. I literally didn't sleep a single minute last night---so, hopefully I'll doze off a bit later after the second shot. I'm not sure if it's the steroid in my body causing actual insomnia, the amount of things on my mind right now, or a combination of both---but I literally just started at the ceiling and walls all night last night.

Again, your words of encouragement truly mean a lot to me. Chat Icon Thank you.

Re: Officially scared out of my mind!

I have to agree to try not to stress too much (it won't help you relax and won't help with the contractions). I will say that I was 1 cm and 50% effaced for about 6 weeks - they were telling me at 32 weeks that I probably wouldn't make it to 34 weeks, than not to 35, etc. I didn't deliver until 38 weeks. I had frequent contractions from excess fluid. Unfortunately you just never know what will happen.
