Oh boy-need some input
After another sleepless night...and the rash had spread I called the DR (even though I know its normal in PUPPS) to make sure she knew...and to make sure if I should even continue taking the steroids...of course the receptionist told me to come in...
I heard the DR reading through my file at the door...for a few min before walking in... and as soon as she did I started to cry.. explaining my STILL sleepless nights... the rash spreading.. my constant taking med (between the steroids, benadryl, tylenol PM and all the over the counter creams.. blah blah blah)
She stopped me mid sentence and said...Relax...unfortunately theres NOTHING I can really do for you.. the only way to get rid of this is to give birth... she then procedded to suggest having an amnio done next week (36 weeks) and if it says the baby is good to go (lungs and size are good) induce me...
She uped the miligrams on my steroids (Im begining to think they are partly for the babys development..however she says the are for me)
I started crying more after this..I began to say how I thought amnios were dangerous, and she says they are early in pregnancy because they can make you go into labor...but this late in pregnancy (36+weeks) they wouldnt stop labor anyway...
She feels judging by my last sonogram..and all my tests..that baby is "fully cooked" however needs that medical proof before inducing me..
I then went on to say...well what if we wait until 38 weeks...If I was going to have a c-section (if my placenta didnt move) this is when we were gonna do it... SKIP the aminio..do another sono..and induce at 38 weeks... She didnt say no..but her response was "Why put yourself through those extra 2 weeks..if your baby is ready now???
I dont know what to do.... This day has been so emotional for me... its so hard to think straight when Im so itchy and sleepy and miserable... These are just the begining stages to this rash...as time passes on things are gonna get worse...so im not totally against being induced...but I dont know...
I go back on Monday with my decsion...and I guess we'll take it from there..
As I was leaving she could see the confusion in my face...and she said...Please relax... I wouldnt suggest anything that was dangerous for you or the baby...and if the test show he wasnt ready...then Im not gonna take him... Personally... I just had my daughter...and if this was me in your situation...I would take the test...
Please give me your input!

Re: Oh boy-need some input
I would g o for the test and see if the baby is ready and if so then I would go and be induced your dr is right why put yourself through this anymore. Your not feeling good now and you said that its only gonna get worse. If it was dangerouse to you or the baby I don't think your dr. would suggest it.

I think your doctor sounds like a good doctor and I would go for the amnio. Especially since they may induce at 38 weeks.. there always could be the chance that you are already 38 week or less then what you think amnio will atleast let you know if its safe for the baby to come out or not. Good Luck!

Re: Oh boy-need some input
Right but they are sugesstinng doing the test at 36 weeks... and inducing immediately pending the tests give the ok...
I suggested skipping the amnio and doing a sono (to measure everything...I know they are less accurate but 38 weeks is alot closer to my due date)and inducing at 38 weeks....
Also anyone here have an amnio..at any point in there pregnancy...was it painful??? HAs anyone heard of it being done this late in pregnancy...and it being any safer???

Re: Oh boy-need some input
I just would feel so guilty if they induced me if the baby wasnt ready and he couldnt come home with me...
Although..she swears the amnio results..will tell ALL...and she wouldnt take him if they read he wasnt ready...
I cant help but wonder...what if the amnio puts me into labor and the babys not ready...????

Re: Oh boy-need some input
I have no idea how bad PUPPS is so my view is a little skewed. But I would say to tough it out as long as you can. I personally wouldn't do the amnio. What if the tests come back and say the baby is not ready yet but the test sends you into labor anyway?
Plus you'll technically have a preemie at 36 weeks. Nothing wrong with that, I'm sure the baby will be fine, but in everything that I've read you have to calculate developmental milestones from the EDD rather than the actual birthdate of a preemie.
Only you know how much more of this you can handle. I send you hugs because if you burst into tears at the Dr - it's gotta be pretty bad!!

Thanks for your opinion Sandra-I will say that I dont think ANYONE understands the horrible discomfort that goes along with PUPPS, but I also cant help but think to myself..."Im doing this cuz im just itchy?" Its the lack of sleep and complete discomfort caused from the itching that is putting me in this situation...
My BIG probelm with doing the amnio is actually what you said...What if the babys not ready and it puts me into labor??? When I asked my DR this, she said she has no doubt in her mind...judging by my last sono + the fact that Ive been on these steroids, that the baby is ready...however is doing this test..to medically back her up ( AKA save her @ss ...imo) I keep trying to do research online to see how risky it is for the baby to born that early 36/37 weeks... and I really havent found anything....
As far as the preemie thing goes....to what extent is this considered...???
For instance..if I deliver at 36 weeks a baby with fully developed lungs and that weighs 10lbs...do they consider that a preemie???
Im not saying this is gonna happen...but it I could... ( a girl from work had PUPPS..and this is exactly what happened to her..because of the steroids..)
This really is so difficult...Thanks again girls for all your different views..please keep them coming...there is nothing I wanna overlook!

Nothing major really, just that say for example when the baby "should" be smiling. Well, for most babies, social smiling begins at 6 weeks. So for a preemie born at 36 weeks, they would consider it still normal if she doesn't smile until 10 weeks, because she was born 4 weeks earlier than her EDD.
A baby is considered premature if it is born before 37 weeks regardless of the weight. That, I believe, is the standard.

Re: Oh boy-need some input
I see......
They were doing the amnio at 36 weeks..and inducing pending positive results...so late 36 weeks..maybe 37... if the actual inducing part hits 37 weeks...should that influence my decision...
Then again I cant help but say... just wait til exactly 38, skip the amnio..and induce then???
Anything before 40 weeks is getting me closer to comfort!
I did bring the 38 week route up to my DR...we didnt really discuss it to much...her response was..."Why wait..if the baby is ready at 36?"

Re: Oh boy-need some input
Ooh Marissa, I feel so bad for you.
I also had PUPPS, so I know how miserable you are feeling.
First I have to say that I absolutely think that you and the baby will be fine no matter what you decided.
I have to say something that no one else has mentioned yet -- the reality of how hard a brand new baby is. I know you don't want to hear this, but I think it should be a factor as you decide. An early delivery date means extra weeks of a potentially really, really difficult to soothe baby. My daughter was impossible for the first six weeks. Had I delivered four weeks early that would have been four more miserable weeks where I was ready to jump out a window.
I know you are frustrated and uncomfortable and at the end of your rope. But I'm just saying that having had PUPPS myself, if I could go back, I would have tried to keep the baby inside me for 46 weeks instead of 40 -- not because of any health risks, but simply because having a newborn baby was so much harder for me personally. Of course I had a very intense baby -- yours could of course be more easy going.
Whatever decision you make will be the right one. Good luck to you!!!

You're right. My son was born premature at 34 weeks. For the first year, they use the due date for milestones.
We were lucky with Joseph - he weighted 6lbs 7 oz at 34 weeks. He was pretty much fine except for having problems maintaining his body weight for a few days. He was released at one week old. I cried when I was released from the hospital without him and when I got my email subscription on his baby development. For some reason I had the crazy idea that because he was out, he wouldn't be developing anymore. Fact is they're going to develop in or out of the womb - and he didnt need to be inside me to do it.
When we had to feed him we had to give him Neosure (special formula) while he was in the hospital & I had to pump. He said that breastmilk was more important for premature babies because your body is making exactly what your baby needs - as if he were in the womb.
Your doctor wouldn't deliver your baby unless he/she was ready.
I completely understand what you are saying, when I said to my DR, how upset I would be, If I was released without my baby...her immediate response was.."Thats why we are doing the amnio"...
The amnio wont lie..right? If it says the babys fetal development and lung maturitry are good..then he shouldnt have to say in the hospital right???
Obviuosly the baby has a better chance of survival at 37 weeks than 34, but how much greater..??
Also...although I will only be 36/37 weeks preg. I cant help but assume...the baby might mature a little faster due to the fact I will have been on steroids for over a month.... right?
As much as the DR says the steroids are mainly for me (but do help the baby to mature faster) I truely believe they've always been for baby... They havent helped me one bit...(Ive already been told there is nothing you can do to control this rash other than give birth..so obvious no drug is gonna control it)and 2. from the research I have done online..and read about other girls stories...if they were induced..they to were given steroids...

Re: Oh boy-need some input
How am I supposed to make a GOOD decision...or shall I say the RIGHT decision..being so itchy and sooooooooo sleeped deprived...
Ive played with these ideas all day in my head... I dont know how Im gonna make it through the weekend...
I have decided NO MATTER what to be induced...after last night..and trying and fighting so hard to function today...I KNOW it is impossible for me to make it through another 5 weeks...
I just havent decided whether or not to do the amnio at 36 weeks.. and be immediately induced...or skip the amnio wait the extra 2 weeks..and just be induced!
I kinda just praying GOd will make the decision for me and Ill just go into labor early on my own... but I kow thats not gonna happen!

Re: Oh boy-need some input
I had PUPPS for 3 1/2 weeks and the doctor suggested I be induced at 38 1/2 weeks, I was feeling better from the medication (pills & prescription ) cream but agreed to be induced anyway. I wish I hadnt it was a miserable experience that ended in a c-section which IMO was the worst recovery. It takes at least a week for the medication to work please try to hold out. After my son was born I was still itchy for a few weeks and it took at least a month for my skin to completely heal. Whatever you decide...Good luck.

See Ive already had it for over a month..and Ive been on pills for 3 weeks...what medication are you on??? The DR has me on 60 mg. of steroids..I feel like they make the rash LOOK sooo much better..but do nothing for the itching!
I really dont care what my skin looks like...and how long it takes to heal... I just dont wanna be itchy!
Ive heard of some real bad experience with being induced and c-sections..and real GOOD ones as well...Which is why Im playing tennis with this idea..back and forth back and forth!
I cant imagine how being on oral steroids for 2 months (If I wait til 40 weeks) and taking all those other otc drugs and creams could be ok for such a lengthly amount of time either...

Re: Oh boy-need some input
Most likely your baby will fall in to the category of pre-term not premature birth. Pre-term are typically close to term babies without many complications.
I wish you the best luck of deciding what to do as it must be difficult. I don't think any Dr can guarantee bringing a baby home with-in a certain amount of time though. My first almost wasn't released due to jaundice and I was about 41 weeks. It's just something you can't predict...
Have you tried anything over-the-counter like Prep-H, Aveeno cream, or anything of that natural in addition to the steriods? What about herbal remedies of flax seed and/or dandelion root? Maybe it would be worth discussing if you decide to wait until 38 weeks.

Re: Oh boy-need some input
Ive tried EVERY OTC cream..and pill I was allowed to take.. I really did stay away from the herbal stuff...for some things I read about online were that they could be a litttle dangerous, and not very helpful...
I completly agree with you about the DR not being able to promise the baby coming home with me, no matter when he's born...
I think what the DR was trying to do with the amnio is promise that his lungs were ok...therefore that wouldnt be the reason he had to stay (if God forbid her ever did)
This is something my DH has explained to me many times... I guess Im just not grasping the concept... I have no control...
I make a decision...whether it be 36, 38, 40 or 42 weeks... I have no idea how things are going to turn out

Re: Oh boy-need some input
I just want to mention one more possibility to give you some hope. My PUPPS actually got better in the last week or so before I gave birth. It had spread to my arms and thighs earlier, but at the end it was just the belly that was itching at all. So there is a chance for improvement...
Boy did I love SARNA lotion.
