Oil or Gas?? Which is cheaper/better? Please help!
Hi,
We need a new heating system in our home. We currently have oil and were going to get a new oil burner. But, now since we already have gas for hot water, cooking, etc. We are thinking of switching to gas. Keyspan currently has a promotion going on?
Does anyone know which is more cost effective? Gas or oil?? Which is safer, better.
Please help us. We don't know which to choose.
Thanks, Denise

I don't have any answers for you - but did you do a search on the home board - I believe it has been discussed over there.

I think it basically "6 of one, half dozen of another". Both natural gas and oil are expensive and will remain that way. I don't think there is much of a difference.

Our heating bill for Gas was 1/3 of what our neighbors paid for Oil in the month of March. Their house has 2 more rooms than us.

I agree. I think gas is cheaper but also not so much of a pain over time. My inlaws oil tank leaked in ground and they had to spend 14-15k remediating it. It was terrible! When we looked for houses, my dh would only look at gas houses.
eta: switch to gas if you have the option...

I don't know what the cost is now, but, I remember back in the late 70's early 80's when the price of oil was climbing, many people switched to gas. They were offered attractive packages. In the long run, it cost them more money and quite a number, who, could afford it, switched back. What I do know is that Keyspan is being taken over by a British based company. Keep an eye on this as it could mean a substantial increase in cost.

A friend was considering switching from oil to gas, however, if it's not already installed, you need to run pipes under ALL of your floors, ripping up your floors and whatnot.

We used to have oil in a house that we rented....and by far it was much more $$ than the gas I pay for my house now.

This is interesting. Was it being chanced from a forced air system? I only ask becuase we have a new gas burner running through the original radiators that were installed in the house in the 30's. I do not think they ripped the piping out to replace it.

I was thinking the same thing because when we had out system replaced from oil to gas they didnt change anything but the burner and the hot water heater. No need to rip up my floors!!

That's interesting. I'm going to tell my friend this who was interested in changing to gas from oil.
