ok another moving out of state question- atlanta
Dh may be able to get a job in atlanta. Does anyone know anything about the area? I am concerned about it being too "southern" . Would I completely be a fish out of water?

Re: ok another moving out of state question- atlanta
My BFF lives there. She grew up on Cape Cod and her DH grew up in Providence. They love Atlanta, it's called the NYC of the south. It's a great city, fabulous restaurants and shopping. I don't think the schools are too hot, they are planning on going private. Their friends are a good mixture of southerners and northerners, but they have made such great friends who do a lot of entertaining (game nights, wine dinners.) She has found the people to be friendlier than the north, but that is so helpful when you are somewhere new.

Im wondering what schools and culture are like outside the city

They chose the to live in the city b/c they really love their neighborhood, old trees, beautiful houses, and they lived there prior to DD. Outside the city, you can get a lot bigger house for your money, but I think traffic can be intense as everyone would def. commute in. Prices of homes in the city are pretty high, not NY, but not what you here about on here for NC/SC. Not sure about the schools, their daughter is only 3 and in a nursery school at Georgia State, which is where my BFF works.
ETA: I've heard good things about Athens. It's a big college town, so has that sporting events (my DH would be in heaven to go to a UGA football game) and cultural aspects.

It's def a big City in the South. Lots of downtown restaurants, etc..
The traffic is really bad though. Especially if you live in the subs.

I heard Atlanta traffic is REAL bad. Almost as bad as L.A. traffic.

Re: ok another moving out of state question- atlanta
I lived in Atlanta for a few years after college. Atlanta itself is awesome, a very young, transient city. It's a very user friendlly city, much more so than NY or LA. Traffic is horrible, but really, it's bad everywhere. I reverse commuted so was lucky in that aspect. I used to work in Gwinnett county which is a northeast suburb and Cobb county which is a northwest suburb. There's also the Perimeter area which is straight north of the city. All have pluses and minuses. My advice if you're moving to a suburb is to stay north of the city, in any direction doesn't matter, but north is better than south. There will be parts of life down there that will strike you as very country and/or southern, you learn to deal and then it just becomes part of your life. The closer you stay to the city, even still in a suburb, the more comfortable you'll be.
FM me if you have any more specific questions about towns and stuff. I'm still very close with the friends I made down there and can gladly ask them for updated info about any places I'm not sure about.

Re: ok another moving out of state question- atlanta
we've been down here since 2004. We lived outside of ATL for the first year and moved further out into a more country like area since it was cheaper.
I'd be happy to answer any questions you have!

Re: ok another moving out of state question- atlanta
I lived in Atlanta for 9 years my husband grew up there. I lived closer to the city near Emory when I first moved there, then we moved to the perimeter then to Alpharetta. There are some great school districts. I would suggest renting an apartment in an area to see where you want to live. There are tons of nice aptartment complexes. Traffic is bad, but no worse then NY.... really depends on what you want, how much house you want, and what type of lifestyle you want. I agree, north of the city is better then the south, but there are some okay areas south of the city. FM if you want more info. I liked it down there, the houses are REALLY cheap now, but I didn't like to be so far away from my family.
