I bought a SONY DSC-H5 which is 12x Optical Zoom and 7.2 Megapixels. I paid around $500 for it 7 months ago. I love it and I think the pics are pretty clear and the zoom is GREAT (which I really wanted). I think you can buy it in BJ's now for @$350

If you're going to buy a digital SLR, I'd go with either a Canon or a Nikon. I don't think you can go wrong with either one. I have a Canon Digital Rebel EOS and we bought that over a Nikon because we already had several Canon lenses. We've had it for a few years now so I don't know how much it would cost. A while back I posted about the lenses I use with some pictures link. The 50mm f/1.8 lens is an AMAZING lens and the best bargain you will find! If you check any photography website you will see lots of people recommend this lens. I recently foudn out the 17-40mm lens is actually pretty expensive and probably cost more than the camera . Now I know why my DH always tells me to be careful with it!

I wanted a SLR, then I realized my DH would never let me out of the house with it...so I bought a fuji e900. I really like it. I just toss it in the diaper bag. no complaints at all.

Canon S3 IS - it rocks! Perfect camera for babies/kids - no delay, continuous shooting, crazy zoom, mini movies.

I agree on all points...
and my FIL just got the 50mm (he says they call it the nifty 50) boy is that lens sharp and for the money - around $70 its a great little lens. Great for Portraits and close ups.
As far as lenses, I have the DSLR Canon kit lens 18-55mm, plus a Tamron 18-200mm lens. I have old Canon lenses from my 35mm that work with the DSLR, they are 80-200mm and a 28-80mm I'd say the Tamron is the most handy as I don't have to switch lenses often.

I've got a cute little digital camera (Canon Powershot Elph I think?) but it takes so long to take a picture that I often miss the cute activity! Which of these awesome cameras you are talking about takes pictures super fast?

We have the Canon Digital Rebel and it is wonderful. It takes such great pictures, we are always getting compliments on them. One of the best investments we've made!
