ok ladies...I am baking a layer cake for my son's first bithday. HELP EDITED with new opinions needed
I am a chocolate person. I really don't bother with cake if it's not chocolate but I am thinking the cake should be vanilla, no?
my idea is to do one round layer cake, and have satelitte cupcakes around it.
I ordered this to top the cake
this the pic below is his invite....
if this was your project, how would YOU tackle it....what kind of cake would you do the layer cake in...what would you make the cupcakes in...how would you decorate...
WWYD?
invite
bumping for update and mass opinions.

Love the topper, really matches the invite.
I love chocolate cake also so I vote for chocolate
I also love Funfetti cupcakes and melted sprinkles kinda goes with the planet/stars theme! Yes they are box cupcakes, but I think they are delicious ...And kids love them
Good luck

I vote chocolate cake. Nothing better than homemade chocolate cake.
My fav layer cake to make- raspberry jelly filling in the middle with chocolate icing.
Kids usually like chocolate over vanilla c anyway.
Do the cupcakes vanilla.

J, I think that funfetti cupcakes would be cool.
Since you probably don't want to make them from a box, check here for a recipe
eta: do a chocolate cake!

Re: ok ladies...I am baking a layer cake for my son's first bithday. HELP
I would do the cake in one flavor and the cupcakes in another. That way if someone doesn't like one, they have a choice.

We only do chocolate cakes because that is what I like. Even our wedding cake was chocolate.
I can't wait to see how it comes out!

Re: ok ladies...I am baking a layer cake for my son's first bithday. HELP
I would do a dome shaped cake and then sculpt the buttercream to look like the craters of the moon.
They sell a cup cake pan and I would use the top of that to make the cake. Then I would get food coloring and make a grey color. I would ice the top of the cake and make some swirl like patterns to mimic craters. I would put the statue on the top of the moon and get some red plastic balloons for his hand. I would make cup cakes if the cake is not big enough for the number of people you have at the party.
For the cup cakes I would ice some in blue and some in white. I would set them out in a star pattern - with a blue background. Alternatively you could do some in yellow to make the flames.

Also you could use those edible silver pear candies to make the crater shapes but that would be a little more time intensive. Also you could do luster dust from Michaels and make the cake pearlized.

Do you have a round pyrex bowl? Or a batter bowl from Pampered Chef? You can bake in them.

ITA! Do chocolate! For DD's cake, the top tier was chocolate with a raspberry/chocolate mousse filling and it was heaven! It was finished way quicker than the bottom tier (vanilla with chocolate pudding).

Re: ok ladies...I am baking a layer cake for my son's first bithday. HELP
ok guys, I found something and I want to know what you think.
I have the 3 bowl set of Pyrex clear mixing bowls. I am going to research how to bake in them for proportion and everything (thank you Domino!!) and Wilton sells these
sooo.....what I was thinking is this, please tell me if it's lame.
i would use the three different sizes of bowls to create 3 asteroid planets, the larger one being the princes and the two smaller ones two of the planets he visits in the story.
I would make 24 cupcakes stars and ice them with yellow icing (I am thinking royal b/c it's thin and smooth...thoughts?)
I would use a dark..navy blue table cloth for the cake table and sort of create the princes' universe out of the table, strategically places the center planet, the two outer planets and the stars around them.
so, am I crazy. please tell me. you will not offend.
thanks!

You can do the cake in vanilla but then do the cupcakes in chocolate... or vice versa.
I would decorate the cake like a moon (from the invite) and just put the topper on.
Cupcakes, ice them in navy blue or black and decorate with Star sprinkles.

that sounds awesome and really creative!
i'd probably go SUPER simple myself... with a regular "party cake" with white frosting, with cupcakes topped with a big swirl of deep blue frosting and sprinkled with star-shaped yellow sprinkes

I don't think that's a crazy idea at all.... my worry, and what I KNOW would happen to me would be I'd plan and plan and if it didn't come out JUST SO, I'd be completely frustrated. I tend to get these grand ideas and then get upset when they don't work out exactly as planned and if they weren't perfect, I wouldn't want to put it at the party... KWIM? I just don't want that to happen to you because you've already got a lot on your plate with everything else for the party...
your ideas sound awesome though. I'm guessing you'd be trying it out beforehand right?

I like your idea...and if you wanted the cupcakes to have a "smooth" finish - I got a great idea from the cupcake book I used to make C's Rubber Duckcakes -
Ice the cupcake using regular icing and stick it in the freezer for a few minutes...then take icing and put it in a microwaveable bowl and nuke it for 10-20 seconds, stir in food coloring and dip the frozen iced cupcake in...makes a nice, shiny, smooth finish and it's really easy...
