OK Long Islanders how do you pronounce..
catalog and dialogue? When I had to videotape myself teaching I cringed when I played it back. I taught a lesson on Greek dialogues but instead saying "dia LOG" I said, "dia LAWG". My friend giggled too. Even though she will say, "I will take my "dawg" for a walk." she will say, "I ordered from a cataLOG." P.S I passed the video but I wonder if they were laughing at me up in Albany!

I really try to tame the LI accent, it's horrible! Sometimes they just slip out though!

Re: OK Long Islanders how do you pronounce..
I had such an argument with my mother recently about the *proper* (standard american english) pronounciation of "forest", "orange" and "horrible"......
HER way: are-enge far- est har-ible
SAE way: Or-enge FOR-est Hor-ible
She teaches English grammar and was adamant the NY way is *the* right way.
Having moved from NY 7 years ago and taken many phonetics courses, I've lost most of my NY accent- although it wasn't intentional.

Re: OK Long Islanders how do you pronounce..
I have lost quite a bit of my NY accent from living overseas for the past 3-4 years and from different linguistics courses. I've lost the main /aw/ sounds, but they are only tamed. When it comes to saying 'atom' and 'Adam' they sound the same. I teach ESL and when I teach pronunciation, many sounds come out. It is really funny when I have to emphasise on a certain sound and I say it and they say it back to me. Then, I understand how my accent really sounds...

When it comes to saying 'atom' and 'Adam' they sound the same. ...
Actually, because of coarticulation (the effect certain sounds have on other sounds in conversational speech) atom and Adam are actually supposed to be pronounced the same way- so you are not in error.
For example- latter and ladder sound the same when in connected speech. It takes too long (and sounds strange) to stop the voicing needed to create the "t" sound- so it's voiced like a "d"
I am a phonetics nerd.....

One of my linguistics professors over in Australia told me that that was something that is more prominent in NY speech. I think she was comparing my speech to the Australians in the room. She was always comparing speech between me and another American in the class compared to Australian speech.
ETA- I am a phonetics geek as well. I studied it and it is part of my job.
