Re: ok--opinions needed on hawaiian luau
I had a luau for my graduation party.
I rented a tent, and went crazy at party city with decorations (Tiki torches, leis for everyone, umbrellas for drinks). I set up a bar with a slushee maker.
We opted NOT to roast a pig, because we had little kids there and they would have been scared.
we played LIMBO, i got a cd of hawaiian music. i told everyone to wear hawaiian gear. it was a lot of fun!

Re: ok--opinions needed on hawaiian luau
There are TONS of decorations in Oriental Trading and PArty City for Luaus. I was just teling DH that that is what we're going to do for our next party. You can serve mixed drinks, and if you do a pig roast, you should try looking on line to see if there is someone who will come and do it for you. We went to a party where there was a man who came with a big barbecue type thing and roasted the pig himself. Good luck - sounds like fun!

I was just at Tennessee Jack's in West Islip, and I saw a sign that they did catering and one of the items that they catered was 'full hogs'.

Re: ok--opinions needed on hawaiian luau
A friend of mine roasted a pig. He had a huge barbecue grill. I just asked DH if he remembers it. DH says the grill looked a bit makeshift, like they found a fence and set it up themselves as a grill. They ended up burning part of the skin. But overall it was fine.
I brought baked apples as a side.
It was very interesting, to say the least! Mostly adults at the party, but some kids. Everyone had fun.
ETA: I don't recommend using a fence as a grill. That wouldn't be healthy! LOL!

Re: ok--opinions needed on hawaiian luau
We held a summer/laua them for my sister's 40th birthday in November (she always wished for a summer birthday).
We had the palm trees, beach balls with fish in it, beach towels, beach chairs, etc.
We didn't do a pig roast but my BIL used to do it all of the time. I've heard it was delicious. If you need a recipe, FM me & I'll ask him. Or Liza can just yell through the wall.

Re: ok--opinions needed on hawaiian luau
We had a luau at my house last year for my friends engagement party. We wanted to roast a pig too but it takes forever and a day I think to cook. My friends mom works at Stop n Shop in Farmingville and she had the butcher make a ham into the shape of a pig. It was really cool and much cheapertoo.

Re: ok--opinions needed on hawaiian luau
my MIL has a roasted pig at her annual BBQ...I believe a few years she did it herself...but more recently, she decided to buy it somewhere and then go to a place where they will do it for you and then they just pick it up. this is in CT

Re: ok--opinions needed on hawaiian luau
ok heres the deal.... its a non=traditional christening party. So far I have the tent...cuz its mine...a 3 vat slurpie machine for frozen drinks... I take tiki torches==pull out the wick and put in its place a glass and do big bunches of colorful flowers and place around yard. Line a path with colored votives to a smaller tent to where all liquor is set up...(I saw this is in a mag--its so cool!) I think I will do a cooler of marinated vodka fruit...one virgin for kids... mango italian ices...tequila or rum punch italian ices for kids... def want to try a pig... hawaiian chicken tuna steak skewers.... a a dj..dk the rest of the menu or anything yet.... so feel free to add to my day here... oh...and beach balls, hula hoops--and 2 water slides.

Open bottle, pour over chicken, grill
It's a marinade from the supermarket, it's the one in the square bottles.

Re: ok--opinions needed on hawaiian luau
My DH and I are actually throwing a luau this summer. We bought a few decorations already at the Dollar Tree. We plan on buying the leis and my grass skirt from Oriental Trading. Everyone must wear luau attire. We plan on buying a roasted pig that's already made. Anyone know of any Hawaiian dishes that I could make myself??
