Ok so DH and I have FINALLY decided on what we would like to adopt.
We really want to add a chocolate Lab to the family. I have ALWAYS wanted one, but he wanted a black Lab or golden or pit mix like our dog we lost....he is conceding to me..wahoo.
We kept going back and forth on a couple of other breeds too, (XXL) ones, but think more of a medium to large dog would be better..and who doesn't love a Lab.
I have my eye on petfinder , but if anyone hears of anything let me know.
Thanks, Lu

Re: Ok so DH and I have FINALLY decided on what we would like to adopt.
Ahhh the chocolate lab. See avatar at left. He's a wopping 90 lbs, 9 month old bundle of uncontrollable energy. Labs are chewers! And they need lots of exercise, or they'll be even worse chewers. I have lost the bottoms of my kitchen cabinets, doorways, molding and bits of sheet rock along the way. And we can't find a toy to give him that isn't shredded in 5 min and we have to take away. Raw hides last 20min if we're lucky. That's actually why I'm on this board for the first time...looking for good chew toys.
People told us that chocolate labs are more high strung than the other colors and I though it was a myth. Now I'm wondering....I suggest reading Marley & Me. It's a good insight into the life with labs, but of course, not all labs are like that, but mine is. It also says in that book that there are two breeds of labs, American and English and the americans are more high strung and the English more calm. Wish I had know that before.
All that junk being said. He has a beautiful coat and is a gorgeous dog. He has moments of utter cuteness that make me almost forget that missing piece of wall. And he's crazy smart! He picks up tricks after about 20 min. So, wouldn't you know it, I have a dog with a repitoire of 20 tricks, but who won't heel or come! And he knows exactly what we want and just chooses to do his own thing...he'd rather play dead than heel.
This was my first dog ever...I'm a cat person. I wish I had known all this and the crazy shedding before we had picked a dog. However, my DH has had labs all his life and still thinks this one is insane.
OK....I ranted enough. We got him from a really good breeder in PA. If you look at the home page, that's him laying in all his glory on the lawn...oh yeah, and he's only 3 months old in the pic!
Good Luck! (I think I just used this whole topic to vent about my dog. Sorry )

Haha..you certainly have a BEAUTIFUL baby!!
Labs are one of the more hyper dogs...for sure...as far as chewing the only think Barney does not destroy in 5 minutes are Giant Femur Bones, and the Galileo Nylabone...everything else is gone.
I am going to get a Lab from a rescue...an older, almost out of puppy stage Lab, so hopeully I can avoid losing some of my walls, HAHA...it is par for the territory though.
Hope yours grows out of puppy stage soon, although it takes Labs a REALLY long time.....

Re: Ok so DH and I have FINALLY decided on what we would like to adopt.
My lab was never a big chewer but he is obsessed with balls. He will play ball morning, noon and night. I take him to the park every day for about a half hour (oof the leash - sometimes to the lake and he swims too) so he gets most of that energy out.
He is the most wonderful dog I have ever had, and I grew up with dogs my whole life. He's 11 and thinks he's still a pup.
Good luck finding one -- there is a Lab Rescue Group on LI....the color really doesn't matter, except to you maybe.

Thanks, I did send an application into Long Island Lab Rescue. Just mailed it yesterday, so will prob. be some time before I hear anything. I will continue to keep my eyes open in the local shelters too.

I Plan too! Not looking for a lil pup though..only because my schedule doesn't allow for a really little one, and I really want to help a young adult this time. I didn't apply to labs4rescue, but another conneticut organization...who knows...
