Ok, talk to me about a newly circumcised baby...
Give me some tips moms because this is freaking me out! I'm afraid that everything I do it hurting him. I'm afraid to hold him on shoulder and burp him, etc. I'm so used to being a girl mommy! Ack! Any advice on caring for it and what to expect?

Don't be afraid. I have been told its not as bad as you think. They are less sensative there now then they will be later. Other than pulling down the skin and globbing on the petroleum jelly at every diaper change there isn't much to it. It was pretty easy and uneventful for us. You will be fine and adjust quickly. I had a boy first so actually havi ng a girl freaked me out a little this time, but I got over it real quick. Good luck and congrats!

Don't be afraid. Just keep applying the A&D ointment ( I am sure the hospital gave you samples) for each diaper change. He will be totally healed very quickly. Congrats again!

ITA - except to add make sure to do the "roll back" when you apply it too. You don't want it reattaching itself (Joseph's did & need to be fixed)

I agree with the PP, it should look much better in a week.

Re: Ok, talk to me about a newly circumcised baby...
just wanted to add, I was paranoid too, so what I did
I layered globs of neosporin, a&d, vaseline, then put a sterile gauze over the whole thing, then diaper, then a diaper in a larger size over.
It was silly, and unnecessary, but it made me feel better

glob on the vaseline and make sure to pull it back. We had an issue with DS at 6.5 months with the skin reattaching.

Re: Ok, talk to me about a newly circumcised baby...
DS's circ began to reattach at 3/4 months old and I kept trying to do all I could to prevent it. I was too squeamish to really pull it though... At his 6 month appointment, I had given up hope and was prepared to hear options about redoing it. The ped took one look, and YANKED the skin back! He had no pain whatsoever! Within days of A&D ointment and lots of pulling back, it was completely healed.
So, my advice: Keep pulling back often, especially at bathtime for weeks and months after you think it healed. If you notice it starting to reattach, pull it back (with some force) or ask the ped to do it. I wish I knew this!

Re: Ok, talk to me about a newly circumcised baby...
its totally fine. i didnt hold DS any special way b/c of it. once he had it done (it was actually after 9pm when the dr. got around to it) he had the whole nite to recover in the hospital and when we got him home it was fine. We kept it clean per instructions and had no problems.
EtA: yes..pull the pee pee back. at our 4mo visit the ped noticed it was maybe starting to reattach. so with every diaper change now i just pull the tip back, clean it with a wipe. DS isnt phased by it.

Re: Ok, talk to me about a newly circumcised baby...
Putting the vaseline on will help him...so you are not hurting him mama
Some tips (what helped with my 2 boys): - Definitely be very generous with the vaseline. We used those packets from the hospital and just sort of dumped it on and around the head.
- Clean the area with a soft wet cloth and be gentle over that area.
- Change poopy diapers as soon as possible so that it's not sitting on or around the penis.
Once the head heals: - You can use baby wipes all over
- Keep vaseline or A&D handy
- To clean the penis remember that you want to push the shaft down a bit so that the head pops upwards..this pulls the skin down. Clean the head in this position (from time to time you will see some white film that comes off (very small amount but this is the ointment that has been sticking in that area...clean it off). All of this helps to prevent the skin from sticking. You can do this maybe twice a day...at least once is fine and eventually you can stop all together. I stop when I notice more and more morning wood because they are stretching it out on their own at that point and there is no sticking problem.
- Point the penis down into the diaper when closing it up to help keep the pee from leaking out up top.
- Throw a baby wipe over the penis when you first open the diaper and keep it on until you clean that area and are ready to ointment and close!
It's actually pretty easy to clean and deal with once you get the hang of it and now worries about UTIs or YI.

I agree, talk to your Ped, or whoever did the circumcison about pulling back.
Some boys do not need to be pulled back that much. We were told to pull DS back twice after the procedure an that's all we did (well, I made DH do it). DS healed perfectly, actually so well, that when I change his diaper, he seems to aim straight at me, pees, and laughs like its the most hysterical thing ever.

Definately go with what your ped says, but I agree you should pull the skin back often. I know soooo many people who had issues because it reattached.

Re: Ok, talk to me about a newly circumcised baby...
Ok, thank you so much ladies. I can't even tell you the anxiety I feel over changing his diaper right now! He keeps kicking himself in the peesh and I'm so afraid of him feeling pain. Ok, here's my question, he just had it done yesterday afternoon, should I be pulling the skin back already? because I wasn't told to do that I appreciate all the responses!!

When the skin reattached on my DS and the ped yanked it free, he didn't even flinch, so that goes to show you that they don't feel any pain! He really wasn't bothered by it one bit! Teething is much worse.....

I just want to send as many as I can to you girls right now because you gave me the confidence to deal with his whole situation down there and my morning was so much smoother because of it. So thank you!!!!!
And not for nothing, but some things never change with boys/men, those damn penises need constant attention

Nothing to add really, just echoing everyone else's responses about being very generous with the A&D ointment and cover with a sterile gauze for the first few days. Just wanted to say you're doing fine and DS will be all healed up in no time!

Re: Ok, talk to me about a newly circumcised baby...
we put a gauze covered in ointment over it, then a diaper . this is best because his peesh never gets spoiled in a poop diaper bc it's covered by gauze sticking to it. he was totally fine never in pain. now on day 6 it looks totally healed!
ewwwwww pulling skin back?!?! YIKES!!!!! I never heard that before. DS is 20 months old and his is perfect. this DS is 8 days and I would never touch it while it's still healing
