Ok this scares me. Cocaine vaccine.
From Newsday - using Cholera proteins to create cocaine vaccine??
This sounds like something straight out of I Am Legend. Like there will be a resurgance of cholera because of this. 
I honestly don't know how this works and although it sounds like a great thing for people trying to quit, I just freaked a little when I heard cholera.

I didn't read too much into detail, but read the first paragraph, and I'm "assuming" - based on nothing factual than what's in my brain - that it's similar to how heroine addicts are treated with methodone - no?

Interesting!
Just FYI, there's no way a person could get cholera from this vaccine. It doesn't contain any bacteria - just proteins. Proteins by themselves can't multiply and cause an infection.

Nope, it's not. Here's how it works:
The vaccine, currently in clinical trials, stimulates the immune system to attack the real thing when it's taken.
The immune system -- unable to recognize cocaine and other drug molecules because they are so small -- can't make antibodies to attack them.
To help the immune system distinguish the drug, Kosten attached inactivated cocaine to the outside of inactivated cholera proteins.
In response, the immune system not only makes antibodies to the combination, which is harmless, but also recognizes the potent naked drug when it's ingested. The antibodies bind to the cocaine and prevent it from reaching the brain, where it normally would generate the highs that are so addictive.
Methadone is actually a drug given to fight cravings... It acts on the opiad receptors and gives the same feeling / effect of being high off certain drugs.
Interesting concept, but not an answer to addiction in general. I think many drug addictions are easily transferable, so the addict needs treatment to stay away from all drugs, not just his drug of choice. However, I'm interested to see what comes of this. I understand cocaine is a terribly difficult addiction.
