Lying on your back while pregnant puts pressure on your intestines and other organs in the area.

According to my doc and a few books I read they say the best position is sleeping on your left side with one leg crossed over the other and a pillow at the knees. It's supposed to be best for bloodflow.

I just read about this this morning in "What to expect..."

you should sleep on your left side because of the baby laying on arteries and for blood flow but I cant tell you the amount of time I wake up and Im on my back. No biggie though. You should try to sleep on your side but if you can't maybe you should get more than 2 pillows.

I know it's hard, but left side is the best.

But on the other hand if you accidently wake up on your back, I would not worry.

Your baby gets the most nutrients and blood flow this way.Chat Icon

I just asked my doctor about this and he said to stop reading so much and get some sleep - that's more important. If you are doing harm it will be uncomfortable and your body will tell you to move.

Exactly, when I am on my back I can't breathe sometimes. It's my body's way of telling me to move.

My Dr. said as long as I'm comfortable not to worry about it.

Re: ok whats the real deal with lying on your back?

My doctor said that the idea of not sleeping on your back is from a small bit of information that has been blown way out of proportion to make all the PG ladies in the world even more neurotic than they already are. Yes, the best position is on the left side, but there is nothing at all wrong with the right side or your back or your belly (if it is comfortable). The most important thing is to sleep. You shouldn't lie FLAT on your back, but I think 2 pillows is enough. That is what I slept with for the whole 9 months, and I often slept on my back.

I always go to sleep on my left side...but for some reason I wake up on my back...which is very strange because pre-pregnancy I was a left side sleeper only.

I actually plan on asking my Dr. about this tomorrow since I am getting bigger now. But truthfully I don't think you can correct something that you do unconsciously

Re: ok whats the real deal with lying on your back?

I always start out on my left side but end up either on my back or stomach...as soon as I feel uncomfortable, I end up waking up and turning onto my side again

That's pretty much what my doc said verbatim, especially the "stop reading so much" part Chat Icon .

Re: ok whats the real deal with lying on your back?

I read not to sleep on your back, but asked the doc and he said I can do whatever makes me comfortable. I have sort of trained myself to sleep on my left side - but would LOVE to sleep on my back some nights.
I think it's one of those "new" concepts. My mom said she never heard of such a thing when she was preggo and all 4 of us are fine and so was she.
I guess you can try to sleep on your left (which is better either way) - but don't overly obsess over it if you wind up on your back.

My doctor said the same thing. He said it's impossible to stay in one position all night.

As you get further along, you will notice that laying on your back for more than 5 minutes is NOT an option. After a bit, I start to feel like I can't breath.
