Okay, excuse my ignorance! Pellet Stoves, fireplaces, etc.
Assuming your house does not have a fireplace, is your only option a pellet stove or is a wood burning stove still an option?

a wood burning stove it still an option. Pellet stoves allow for the lowest cost chimney system and they are easier in a sense than wood burning because there's no wood chopping, drying, etc. We've had a pellet stove for about 6 years, I love it.

Thank you! Do you have a generator for it, too? That's my concern. I grew up with a fireplace/wood burning stove. If the power went out, we still had heat. With the pellet, you have to have a generator, too, correct?

We do not have a whole house generator but we do have the ability to keep it running. We live in a fairly rural, very heavily wooded area in suffolk and the only time in 11 years that we ever lost power during cold weather for an extended period was Sandy. My neighbors have a wood stove and they spend a lot of time on weekends with their wood splitter and rotating wood so they always have enough dried. I know my DH doesn't have time or energy for that. Another possible con of a pellet stove is they are slightly less esthetically pleasing than a traditional wood burning stove.

We just got a pellet stove and we love it. And it is just as pretty as a regular wood stove - maybe even prettier.
We had to go pellet because we could not a run a vent to the top of the roof. The pellet vent goes out the side of the house - less expensive and easier to install. We just ordered the cable we need to hook up the back up battery so if the power goes out, the stove will stay on and if the power is out a long time, we can hook it up to our generator.

We've had a pellet stove 2 years & it was the best investment we've made. No more oil bills & it heats our entire 2300 sq ft multi level home. It's such a clean burn too. If power goes out, we do have a whole house generator but have the ability to start our stove without power too
