okay so you've all seen my ugly kitchen, now what can i do to my horrid YELLOW formica countertops? i need suggestions!
we're definitely painting the cabinets next summer (when it's warm!)
what can we do with the ugly yellow formica countertops short of replacing them? i looked into new formica once and it was $$$$. in 5 years or so we're hoping to gut our kitchen so i don't want to do anything expensive, just a cheap temporary fix.
any ideas??? here's a pic to refresh your memory of just how yellow they are:

I'm not sure what you really can do. Counters get a lot of use, so if you painted them they'd probably get chipped up fast.
You could try contact paper, but if something happens to it and you want to remove it the counters might be really tacky and then it would take a while to remove all the glue.

I wonder if you could tile over it? and you can do the back splash also.
You might want to look into that.

What about replacing it with butcher block top from Ikea? My cousin has it in her house & it looks great. I don't think it was to much$$

honestly, I would wait to paint the cabinets and see how heinous the counter still looked.
I don't love my countertop either...but the $500 I could spend temporarily fixing it could also sit in the bank until I am ready to do the rip job.
I know it's hard when you see all these home shows and people's new kitchens...but unless you spend A LOT of time in there....or it opens on to your formal/entertaining space...I would suck it up and wait.
I mean...i AM sucking it up and waiting (though I admit the color of mine isn't quite as bright )
but I think if you pick the right paint, you can tone down the color and have a more livable kitchen. good luck.
ETA: painting your cabinets a nice white would make your kitchen bright and cheery. you could accent with ANY color...greens, blues, reds and it wouldn't look bad at all.

You can probably have them sprayed. When we turn apartments in my building, we have the counters sprayed. Has a nice finish and color. I think it's some kind of Apoxy mix.
I also agree with Ophelia, painting the cabinets a nice white will probably go a long way. New hardware and yellow accents.

I totally agree. Once the cabinets are white, the countertop probably won't look as bright. I would ask at Lowe's and HD if there is an Apoxy paint that can be used for the countertop and backsplash that will last you a while until you redo your whole kitchen. GL!

You can absolutely paint them. Your kitchen looks similar to myold kitchen. My countertops were a nasty marbelized formica. My SIL painted them for me in 2004 when I was preggo with my 2nd child and they lasted with minimal chipping till we redid the kitchen in 2006. I would have to ask her the entire process but it can definitely be done. Let me know if you want to me ask her what she used (FM me in case I don't revisit the thread), I'm sure she will remember bc she had done the same in her own kitchen before the did some updating as well.

My mom did the same thing - painted the counters as a temporary fix, because she wanted them to look better in the meantime until they decided what to do with the whole kitchen. I know she used some kind of spray finish so it wouldn't chip off too easily. If you're planning on replacing them eventually, it's definitely an option.
