Olympic post! So, do you think she deserved ...
silver? We watched it after reading Heidi's thread about the news spoiling the results. With that in mind, knowing who got what in the rankings, we were a little annoyed that Sasha Cohen fell/stumbled big time twice and STILL got a silver! I know that the skaters can get points for doing difficult jumps or maneuvers later in their programs, which she did. And she had beautiful choreography, but the Canadian, Joannie, the other Japanese skater, Fumie and the Russian/Georgia girl also did really well and DIDN'T FALL!!!

It was not just based on last nights performance, it was based on the short program too. The other gals you named didn't have the same difficulty/artisrty that the other girls did. All has to do with their new scoring system. I think she deserved the silver, I don't think anyone was a Wow'er last night, not even the japanese gal that won, she did a lot of doubles.

Last night's routine wasn't silver medalist material ... BUT ... her short program was awesome and that helped in her scoring so high.

I was a bit surprised that she still won the silver, but she is so beautiful to watch, artistically she is the best on the ice... I dont know it is tough to say...

Re: Olympic post! So, do you think she deserved ...
I think her choreography was the best of the three, but I thought the Russian woman should have scored a little higher on the technical score.
To be honest, when they broke down the scores, I was surprised to see the Japanese woman's score for composition was the highest, I thought both Sasha and the Russian had more artistic routines. I think the Japanese skater did deserve to win, since she hit all of her jumps and had a good performance, I just thought the 2nd score was too high.
Overall, my impression is that they might be making the whole long program too difficult. Nearly every skater fell and the programs seemed a little boring compared to previous years. It seemed like so many of them spend so much energy and focus on the jumps that the rest of the routine seems to fall a little flat.

Re: Olympic post! So, do you think she deserved ...
I was reading an article on the new scoring system, and it seems that they are more rewarded for trying more difficult jumps, etc and failing than completing less difficult moves. For instance, a triple jump (i really don't know the difference among them all) may have 10 difficulty points, but if they screw it up they will maybe end up with 7, whereas completing a double perfectly will maybe only get them 5
(I have no idea the actual scoring, just making a generalization from what I understood from an article i read). Which seems to ruin it for those that have to watch!!
I'm all for pushing yourself to do the best, but no wonder why Michelle Kwan and Sacha have these injuries!!

I totally agree! DH and I were watching it and thinking that the routines don't have the same flair that they used to have but we were talking about how the skaters have required moves, so you keep seeing these moves over and over and it gets redundant. I love when they dance on ice. I used to dance so when they do that, I'm totally impressed. Not all of them do that.

Even though she fell I thought the rest of her routine as well as her short routine were beautiful. The new scoring rules are so confusing, but I think she deserves it.

Re: Olympic post! So, do you think she deserved ...
DH and I debated this last night. I compare it to being a b'way performer. I would rather watch someone with a good voice that is selling the shi! out of the song then see someone who is technically perfect, but not connected to their material. Sasha has a quality to her skating that nobody else has, not even Kwan IMO. I was glad to see that be rewarded instead of just who jumps around the most.
