Sixty years ago, my dad had a dog, Laddie, and a cat. The cat had a litter. Not sure if it as sick or what but it wanted very little to do with the kittens.
Laddie would lick the kittens, pick them up in his mouth and position them close so they could feed on the cat, and snuggle with them to give them warmth.
From my dad's description his dog was a "manly dog", roamed the neighborhood, got in fights... so the family couldn't believe it.
