Why are people proud to be a size 0 but not so happy about a size 16 or 18? Society I think...We have an extremely heavy person in my office who yesterday broke a chair during a meeting. I couldn't help but think how hard her life must be, not fitting in chairs or in airplane seats...I don't have that kind of sympathy for really thin people, though maybe I should...
both aren't healthy by any means....and i think it is sad that society has more "empathy" for the Fat and not the excessively skinny....
they both pretty much stem from the same origins
I guess my sympathy is directed at her because life just isn't made for really heavy people. Our chairs, our cars, our airplane seats, our clothes...I never have to think about those things. One time we met for a meeting in a classroom where the chairs had the desk things attached, and she got stuck. They had to get her out and then each meeting bring in a folding chair just for her.
i understand that but how can you say that you have no sympathy for the other range of the spectrum....
both when are at the extremes are considered disorders....
i would hope that people would look at both and feel empathy equally

I actually saw a Dateline show recently or something where doctors even felt uncomfortable telling heavy people they were too fat and needed to diet to be healthy. I think it's a matter of not wanting to offend..
There was a doctor on GMA that was being sued for telling a patient she was obese and needed to lose weight for her health.
I remember hearing about that- I don't think any money was awarded, but he was disciplined and sent to a sensitivity training course.

I feel pity for them, but I don't think they are treated as badly by our society. Thin is valued in our society, while obesity makes you the object of ridicule.

I can't understand law suits against doctors. Seems like that's all I ever hear from friends and family members: "Doctor says I have to lose weight."

This is valued in our society until you are deemed "too skinny" - then you are plastered all over magazines and poked fun at on tv (and chat boards )
Lindsay Lohan is a prime example - people pointed out how "chubby" she was...how she could stand to lose some weight. Then she goes and loses weight - and she is *gasp!* "too skinny". Now she has "put on a little" so people are deeming her "healthier".
To whoever said it, yes, I am sensitive to it. I am naturally thin and I physically cringe when I hear the word "skinny". It is usually said with such contempt, it's hard not to be sensitive to it.

because people strive to be skinny, and they take it overboard- and thats the example and role models that young girls are looking up to these days. People dont strive to be 'fat', nor do they put pressure on others to be 'fat' either. Yes, an extreme in either direction is unhealthy, and should be helped. Myabe youre offended because youre skinny, but people are naturally skinny and im sure it stinks if youre completely underweight, BUT no one can argue that these stars are "naturally" like that in any way. theyre Dying to be thin... literally. and thats where the problem lies.... not in them just being 'naturally underweight'.
and Yes,,, there were posts recently abou how "Fat" courtney love had gotten, etc... so all bases have been covered
well said neenie.
and i do believe that i used the words "too skinny"......because to me, when you are able to see BONES, that to me is TOO skinny.

Thank you for posting this.
I too cringe at the work "skinny".
I've been battling these fat v. skinny ideas forever. I weigh 98lbs. I'm sure that if a picture of me was posted in what Mischa Barton was wearing there would be people on this site that would say 'ewwwwwwww she's so skinny . she must NOT eat, there's no way she could be that skinny and eat (and not purge).'
Well, that's crap. I eat plenty (just ask Elbee and Kelly - they've seen it first hand ). I just happen to eat healthy and have been blessed with a very quick metabolism.
I'm not even that extreme a case. I've had 2 friends during my lifetime that were constantly ridiculed for being too skinny. They were asked by teachers if they were anorexic and made fun of by students for being so skinny. Neither were and both have a number of self-esteem issues due to it. If they had been 'fat', I really believe they wouldn't have received the ridicule that they did, at least not from teachers telling them their body weight was a source of concern.
Weight is a sensitive topic Period. It's not fair for someone else to say "oh, no, it's ok to say something about how skinny someone is, that's ok. But don't you dare talk about how 'fat' someone is, that's just wrong." Why the double standard?

Personally, I think you look fine. You've got a petite frame. You're small. I don't think you look underweight or too skinny or sickly. Perfect weight for your build, IMO.

That's the main problem - a lot of people don't.
Mental illness has EVERYTHING to do with EDs. They are a mental health disorder, moreso even than a nutritional, issue.
However, I do think that before you even get to the mental health stigma with this, it's a PITA for someone to constantly question whether you eat!

I thought an eating disorder was a form of mental illness.
To starve yourself, or binge and purge or on the other hand eat and eat and eat all day have to stem from some mental problem.

see, i never knew that. i just never looked at it from that perspective. i always looked at it as a self image thing, an esteem issue. hmm...emotionally tied, i guess it would connect the mental illness thing.

I can relate to everything you said - especially the above. It seems OK for people to ask me if I eat or if I'm a size 0. I would never be so insensitive as to ask someone if they ever thought to not eat or if they wore a size 22.
You'll never hear a thin woman call a fat woman a b!tch b/c of her size or hear a thin woman tell a fat woman that she hates her, b/c of her size...but you'll hear the reverse plenty of times.
People should live by the old saying - if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.
IMO.
