OMG - this is horrible!!! Newsday Article!
Whitestone woman died after being crushed under the massive tires of a 15-ton construction machine outside the counseling center where she worked in Oceanside, Nassau police said Tuesday.
Lauren Ludwig, 53, assistant director of the South Nassau Communities Hospital Counseling Center, was accidentally struck by the orange front-end loader about 11:30 a.m. Monday, police said. Ludwig, assistant director for less than a year, died a half hour later at the hospital, about a mile away from the counseling center.
"She went from being an employee to a patient," said Nan Gerson, a spokesperson for the hospital. In a statement, the hospital said it was "deeply saddened" by Ludwig's death.
A man answering Ludwig's home phone said the family "couldn't talk about the tragedy right now."
The hi-loader was working in a job site managed by Brooklyn-based Proton Construction Corp. The company was hired by the Oceanside School District to resurface the roof of a district-owned building that houses the counseling center at 71 Homecrest Ct., school officials said.
Tuesday, no one with the construction company returned messages left at its office.
Police said Ludwig apparently didn't see the hi-loader as she walked toward the center for work.
The operator, whose name wasn't released by police, apparently didn't see her either, investigators said, but the driver stopped the machine after hearing a scream.
Oceanside firefighters responding to the accident found Ludwig "lying on the ground," Chief Thomas McDermott said, adding that he didn't know whether Ludwig was conscious after the accident.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating, but John Chavez, a spokesman for the federal agency, declined to comment Tuesday on the inquiry.
