SCARY! Why don't they tell you about this stuff and let you opt -in, so to speak instead of the other way around? Ugh....

Thank you for posting this. I'm not a parent but this scared me! I tried to follow the directions for the iphone that was shown in that clip but it didn't work for my specific iphone. Here are the directions for some of the phones:

Can't see youtube, but is this about Geotracking? I saw a special about it on the news or some nightline type program and I was amazed! Scary. I checked and my blackberry has pictures geotracking disabled, so hopefully that's all I need to do.

Re: OMG! is this true??

Any camera that has gps on the same device can easily do this. I've worked with the technology. You can urn off the "feature" on any phone.

Images can store a lot of data. I've even seen images coded to store virus scripts.

What scares me is how common it is not to know. Imo, the less you know about technology the more you put yourself at risk.

Re: OMG! is this true??

so completely scary! Turned off all the location stuff. Geez, and to think I was all over the place the last 24 hours...could've been tracked down so easily.

Thank you for posting this!

OH MY GOD! Thanks for posting this!!

ETA: There are no directions for the Droid X but I just figured it out. You just have to go to the camera, click the tag icon in the upper-left hand corner and uncheck all boxes.

Yes, it is scary, but one thing I don't understand...and maybe it is because I am just technologically inept: if you have your FB account set up so that only your friends can see your posts and photos, why is there a fear of strangers seeing them?

Re: OMG! is this true??

Thanks for posting this but I have a dumb question...can this affect photos on facebook that were not taken with a phone? i have pictures of my kids on FB but they were taken with a regular camera, not an Iphone.

Image addresses on facebook or anywhere, don't have passwords or any kind of protection so this image from my facebook, none of you are my friends, but you can see it:

So your images are actually public, and if someone links them like I just did, well then its easy for anyone to find and see.

TY for posting this. This freaked me OUT!!!

However, if I have my settings on FB set to private how would outsiders see my photos anyway? right? no?

see my post above! outsiders can still see your pictures if they are sneaky enough! Hackers could do it easily.

I was going to say something very techy like you have to read the metadata of the image. But luckily there is a free online app that does it, after I did a search!

exif app

Just copy the url address of your image and it checks for a geotag.

for an example of an image that has a ton of information taged to it try this one

Facebook removes metadata from pics you post on it anyway, so the gps data is not retained. For other websites, you can remove metadata yourself.
