OMG, the things kids say!

This is totally embarrassing and I can't believe I'm revealing this, but I just feel so awful.

We were in Trader Joe's yesterday picking up some groceries. One of the workers was a woman, but clearly on the masculine side of the spectrum.

And wouldn't you know it, this woman, who was VERY nice and VERY helpful, walked by to answer a question and Alex starts pointing to her, screaming out loud: "boy, boy, boy" Chat Icon Chat Icon

WHY oh why would my child decide to do that out of nowhere??? I was so embarrased. The woman obviously heard her, but pretended not to. I kept shushing Alex and saying, no, Alex, that is a girl.

What would you have done???

Re: OMG, the things kids say!

DS is 4.5, and he's known gender for years. He knows who is a girl and who is a boy, but he has a problem with pronouns. Everyone is "him" or "he". "He's a pretty girl" or "His dress is pink because he's a girl."

You could always pass it off as DC is still learning gender and gender names. It happens, and I'm sure DC will embarass you many more times over the years... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Oh, I am so not looking forward to those moments.

I'd probably run to the cookie aisle, rip open a box and shove one in their mouths so they couldn't say anymoreChat Icon Chat Icon

I was just discussing this with my cousin who has a four year old. She was in church and they were walking by a young boy with braces on his legs. As they approached she said to her DS, "You can ask me anything when we get to the car, just don't say anything right now." She repeated it about three times and was Chat Icon that he wouldn't blurt something out. Then he started to yell, "Mommy, Mommy, Mommy... that boy... Alot of time when i go food shopping with my father, we have this one cashier (who might say is one of the nicest people), I guess you can say she is kinda guyish, but just b/c shes really broad and deepish voice, my father (b'par) sometime says Sir.. to this woman.. Chat Icon I get so embarassed, he doesnt mean to say and always apologizes and corrects himself, but always happens.. Chat Icon

Re: OMG, the things kids say!

My kids have come out with things over the years that have made wish I never got out of bed that day!!!

Depending upon the situation I usually just look at the other adult and say "well that was really embarassing" for some reason it makes me feel better b/c they usually respond with something regarding how "kids say the dardest things" or some funny anecdote of their own.

Like those "Need a moment...." Twix commercials! Chat Icon

I probably would have done the same thing! At least that shows how keen her sense is of gender at this young age!

And Tah-wee-ZAH, that is such a cute story, it's refreshing to see a child be able to look past what we think are obvious differences and see the similarities. Oh that we adults were the same....Chat Icon

Re: OMG, the things kids say!

Very Funny ... you handled it perfectly. I don't think I would be offended if a child was saying boy as they were pointing to me because I would just think s/he hadn't learned the difference yet. Just the other day a 5yo boy came up to Johnny and asked him if he was a boy and he said no.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Great idea.

Jordana calls all women she sees in magazines "Mama". She pointed to a picture of Gweneth Paltrow and said "Mama". Chat Icon Now I'm a brunette with hazel eyes. no, I don't look ANYTHING like Gweneth Paltrow.
