OMG we got run out of a hotel in Ohio (LONG)
I swear to G, I had a real-life LIF board war experience this weekend.
We drove to Ohio to see the inlaws on Thursday. Because of unexpected traffic, we didn't get into our hotel until LATE (11pm).
We checked into what should have been the 2-room end suite we specifically asked for only to find it was actually a one room with a "floating wall" and no door between the *rooms*. It was also smack in the middle of the hotel, so we had "neighbors" on each side. DH and I were at the idea of trying to get 2 overtired children to sleep in the same room, but immediately started trying to get them down.
It was bad- they both wanted mommy. The baby refused to sleep in the PnP without crying, so I decided to have her sleep on me, or at least in the bed with me and Mads. Mads wanted nothing to do with DH in the meantime, but wanted me to hold her. She was crying as well. Needless to say, I was DYING because I knew the hotel was booked and we were likely annoying the neighbors.
FINALLY- I get Eliza sleeping and am able to transfer her to the bed so I get started on Maddie. At this point, she's in the bed with me and just talking when all of a sudden someone starts POUNDING on the door. No joke, POUNDING. Not knocking with a knuckle, like pounding with a closed fist. It literally shook the room- and woke Eliza, AND scared the crap out of Mads who thought it was THUNDER.
DH opens the door and it's the guy next door to us. He starts loudly complaining about our kid keeping him up, he needs to get up in the morning, etc. DH calmly explained we were trying our best, that he was really sorry. The guy goes on and on and DH kept telling him, "Look, I told you, we are trying our best. I'm really sorry." The guy is STILL ranting and DH finally closed the door in his face.
Within 15 minutes, we finally got them both quieted. We were up by 7 and out of the room the next day by 9am. We returned from the inlaws about 7pm to try to get the kids down before it got too late.
I called the front desk to find out if the same people were in the room next to us and if she knew if they were in there. Turns out they were still checked in and part of a wedding party (possibly the brida and groom?) and were out at the rehearsal dinner, so no one was in the room at the moment (thank God).
It took some time, but we finally got them to bed by 9:15. In the meantime, you could hear eveything outside the room- the walls were thin. We could hear people in the halls, upstairs, the other people next to us, etc. We could also hear THEM when they returned that night.
The kids stayed relatively quiet until 7am. By relatively quiet, I mean no screaming, yelling, crying for more than a few seconds. Mads sometimes cries out in her sleep for literally a second, and that happend twice. Eliza woke up twice to nurse, but just fussed for a couple of seconds until I got her on the boob. We dealt with a wall pounding for each of these *indiscretions*.
At 7, the kids were up for the day. No crying, no screaming, just a toddler talking and an 8 month old babbling. DH hears the guy next door leave. 5 minutes later, the phone rings and it's the front desk explaining they received a "complaint". Turns out the @ss from next door decided to go down and complain.
Because of this jackass- what we were doing to Madelyn was borderline abuse. We were clapping our hands over her mouth every time she'd talk loud. Forget about when she was crying, we were practically smothering her. The stress was ridiculous- so we decided to check out of the hotel and stay at my already crowded inlaw's house.
The lady at the front desk felt terribly. Turns out the jackass had been complaining about us since the first night. She said he was told the first night that we had just checked in, which was why we were being loud. He was also told we had very young children. She also said he was a rude gentleman and had been nasty and complained about everything else at the hotel as well. Also- NO ONE else had complained about our children, not even the people on the other side of us.
I gotta tell ya- I was a flight attendant for 14 years and have stayed in hundreds of hotels all over the world. I've dealt with every kind of disturbance imaginable so I UNDERSTAND the annoyance of having my sleep disturbed. But what the FLUCK did this guy expect us to do? It's not like we had a 6 year old who we allowed to run willy-nilly. They are 2 and 8 months. I guess when I pay 94 bucks a night I expect that I might be dealing with "other people's" noises.
I hope when that couple has kids they deal with colic for the whole first year so thay can see what *real* kid-noise is.
Ugh- I'm so glad to be home.

If he was rude & nasty, it sounds like the wrong person left the hotel.
Don't even think twice about it. Here's to their colicy children!

Re: OMG we got run out of a hotel in Ohio (LONG)
What a horrible experience!!!
I would send an email or call the Hotel headquarters and complain. It's not their fault that this guy was completely rude to you. However, it is in their best interest that they look out for the comfort and well-being of every guest.
Did they offer to move your room? Did they offer to move his room? What actions did the manager of the hotel take to make the situation better for both parties? It sounds like you felt forced to leave because of this guy. That's not fair to you at all.
Who knows...maybe nothing will come of it. But, then again, you may also get a free night's stay at that hotel or any other hotel in that chain. I'd also mention in the complaint that you did not get the room you requested and confirmed in advance.
I'm really sorry you had such a bad stay at that hotel and had to worry so much about your children making noise because of that psycho next door.

What a nightmare for YOU! I'm sorry, but I am always prepared for a horrible night's sleep when I am at a hotel due to outside noise. If you don't want noise, stay home

Re: OMG we got run out of a hotel in Ohio (LONG)
Ugh, what an idiot.
Does he not realize that every time he POUNDED on the door, he was probably making the problem worse? I know that my DD would wake up in 2 seconds if there were a loud noise like that.
I probably would have checked out of the hotel, too...but I probably would have left a nasty note under his door before leaving.

What kind of a jerk complains about young children????? Talk about self centered.
I'm sure he's got a lot of friends with that attitude.

Re: OMG we got run out of a hotel in Ohio (LONG)
I might be the only one who thinks it but don't you think 11pm is kind of late to arrive with 2 very young children? In other words if you had planned a bit better and gotten there earlier the whole debacle could have been avoided, no? I'm not saying he handled it well at ALL but maybe next time you can get on the road earlier so the kids aren't overtired when you arrive?
OMG Amy I had to make a joke reply 'cause I'm experiencing an inappropriate RAAAAAGE at that d-bag after reading that.
