OMG we might be getting another DOG!

We have a 1 1/2 year old cockapoo and have been thinking about getting him company since he stays alone while we work. Well, I saw an ad in petfinders for a labradoodle for adoption. I have been e-mailing with the lady and he sounds like a wonderful dog. The only thing he is 8 mth and approx 45 lbs. My dog is only 15 lbs. What advice do you ladies have for large breeds. Would it even be a good idea to get a big dog as opposed to another small one? Does that mean I would have to give them free reigns of the house? Sammy has a room and the hallway when we leave him alone. Sorry so long, I'm a little anxious.

My first question is how would either dog react to the other? Will your current dog be accepting of a new dog? Do you know how your pup is socially? Are you prepared to possibly have to separate them during the day when they are alone?

The adoptor that you have been speaking to, have they given you any insight as to how the Labrador Poodle Mix is with other (especially smaller) dogs?

I have 4 dogs & sometimes it si a lit more work than anticipated to get them all to get along. It took almost a year for Loki, my Shiba Inu, to be allowed to interact with my Pug while we were ot home b/c he used to torture him when we were not around. This meant putting up gates all over our house to keep them all apart.

Re: OMG we might be getting another DOG!

I have a 9yo lhasa apso (with attitude) and a 2 1/2 yo labradoodle. They get along great. My lhasa is 19lbs and my labradoodle is about 70.

They are great together, my labradoodle even gets down on the floor and plays with the jingles(lhasa). Its almost as if they were made for each other.

Oh, and btw the labradoodle is still crated only because the house is still under construction and she is fine.

FM me if you want any further info, btw I also adopted my labradoodle at 8mos.

Re: OMG we might be getting another DOG!

Well, the lady has 2 other smaller dogs and live in an apartment and she feels this dog needs more room. My dog is very friendly. We used to take him to a doggie park in brooklyn and he loved it. Also, my sister has a dog and they get along great. So before we adopt we would meet and bring Sammy to meet him too. Now, I would have to separate them? :0( I guess my main purpose was for them to keep eachother company.

Not necessarily, but it is a possibility. I know that my Shiba Inu became incredibly destructive & would torture my Pug when they were left alone together. He is now over 2 years old & finally at the point where we can leave them alone together.

My 2 smaller dogs are great together & I only separate them when they eat b/c they are on different foods.

OOH I know how that can be. We looked at & interviewed with about 7 different foster moms before getting approved for adoption with Bruno (our chihuahua). It is very rewarding in the end though. Rescue dogs are very loving & special.
