Re: On Elena Kagan

Really great article. I love this line:

"If we started telling little girls early on that it's okay if they don't want to play house, or hold a baby during playtime and that while some will grow up to be mommies, some will grow up to do other things, then the entire conversation around reproductive choice would change--for the better. A girl has to be taught early on that she has real options in her life as a woman, thereby giving her an incentive to make responsible choices when she's younger."

Thanks for posting the article. The title alone grabbed me since I never looked at it from that perspective.

Re: On Elena Kagan

Sorry to crash, but I want to share that I truly enjoyed reading that article.

As a mother to one little girl (4 years old) it is a challenge. I studied gender issues in college and never want to teach my daughter was a girl is "supposed" to do (as opposed to a boy). But its hard. As a newborn, I wanted a bedding set that wasn't all pink. I had a struggle finding one and finally settled on one that had equal doses of pink, blue, yellow and green. I bought her trucks and dolls and she played with both. I never even showed her a princess film until her cousin did- and focused on movies like Cars, Horton Hears a Who, and other more gender neutral films. And I still have girly girl.

Now i am a professional woman who goes out to work every day- and I am proud to be teaching my girl that women can work.

And as a former nanny- I have to say that I have tremendous respect for women who recognize that having children is not for them, and chose not to have children.

I have to say, I really liked how the article also focused on the cost of having children. I always wanted 2 kids, but its so cost prohibitive- so for now, we're sticking with one. I can't tell you how many comments I get from "the money will come" to "its so unfair to DD." I think its more unfair to DD to see her parents stressed out and struggle financially to have 2 kids rather than enjoy life and focus on the one child we have...

but thank you for sharing that article- and I'm glad I "crashed" to read it. I think its something that all mothers of girls should also be aware of.
