One bathroom houses
A few houses I am interested in have everything I am looking for but only one bathroom! That is definitely a deal breaker for me. What are your opinions about having only one bathroom in your house? Is it as bad as I think?

Re: One bathroom houses
We bought a one bathroom house with the intention of adding a bathroom at some point. We lived in the house for a year before we added a bathroom to our basement. It really wasn't that bad.

Re: One bathroom houses
I think it depends on how many people you have living in the house, how often you entertain and what your morning schedules are. My DH is a bathroom hog, he is honestly in our master bathroom for over an hour on weekdays. He leaves for work anywhere between 6:45 and 7:30 which is the time i need to get ready but we have two other bathrooms so it doesn't prevent me from being on time. We also entertain a lot, usually about 20 people and one bathroom would be tricky on those days.

Re: One bathroom houses
We have one and its not a big deal until I got pregnant and have to go downstairs to pee in the middle of the night. We are planning to pit one upstairs at some point.
At Christmas we had my parents with us for 2 weeks and we were fine with one.

Re: One bathroom houses
We have one and its TINY, and honestly, it has never been an issue. With that said, DH leaves for work a full hour before me so in that regard we arent fighting over it in the morning - that may have made a difference in how I felt about it.

Re: One bathroom houses
We have 1.5 baths - the 1/2 bath is in our bedroom, but the full bath is right outside our bedroom in the hall. Honestly, if we didn't have the 1/2 bath I wouldn't even notice BUT my kids are both young and not potty trained. Also, DH leaves for work way before I do so it's never been an issue.
If you could feasibly add a new bathroom in a couple of years, I would not count that as a deal breaker.

Re: One bathroom houses
I grew up in a house with 7 people and 1 bathroom. I hated it! Even now, when I go home to visit, I hate it! There is no privacy. Everyone always seems to need to use the bathroom when you need to use it.
I refused to look at houses that had less than 1.5 bathrooms. Our current house has 3 bathrooms and I LOVE it! There is never any competition for the bathroom.

Re: One bathroom houses
When I re-tiled one of our bathroom floors, I was very thankful that we had 2 bathrooms.... When we remodeled the other bathroom, I was very thankful that we had 2 bathrooms....
Now that we have 2 DC, I'm very glad that we have 3 bathrooms (although I've still had to wait a few minutes on more than one occasion....)

Re: One bathroom houses
We have one upstairs and one we don't use in the basement (it needs to be redone). I can't wait to get it redone. It is a hassle with one bathroom especially if you have to go up a flight of stairs to get to it. Also, when I was pregnant I was going up and down those stairs every 10 minutues. Our next house, one of our must haves will be a bathroom on every floor.

Re: One bathroom houses
I have a one-bathroom house. Originally we said we "must have" a 1.5 bath house at least - for all of the reasons mentioned - but looked past that when we bought this house (which is a ranch, so everything is on one floor).
Remodeling it was the first project we did, and it was really, really annoying. Our friend is a contractor though so he was doing the work and put the toilet back on each night for us (except one when the floor was setting -we stayed at my in-laws' house). But we had to brush our teeth in the kitchen and shower at our parents' houses at night. Fortunately that was just for a week.
Now, it's really not an issue for us - but it is only the two of us. If we stay in this house (which honestly I hope we don't, but you never know!) we would finish the basement and add another bathroom down there.

Re: One bathroom houses
DH and I both grew up in 1 bathroom homes and we now own a 1 bathroom home. It works. Yes, it would be convenient to have a 2nd bathroom when we have guests, but it's not impossible to live with.

Re: One bathroom houses
Deal breaker for me. Our coop is 2bdrm/1 bath and the thing motivating me to move sooner than I would is a second bath.

Re: One bathroom houses
It was a must for us to have atleast 2 toilets, but then we found a house that had everything else but that. The house also had the perfect place to add a second bathroom at some point so we bought it. 1.5 years later we did add that bathroom
If its really important to you and you really love the house... just make sure it has the potential to add one later!

Re: One bathroom houses
We only have one bathroom, it's not an issue. Someday, we might dormer upstairs and put in a half bath, but who knows.
We stayed at my Aunt's upstate this summer - 7 of us and only one bath, it wasn't a big deal, we did fine for a week.

Re: One bathroom houses
I have never had more than 1 bathroom so I am used to it. Everyone just has to wait for their turn if they have to use it at the same time.
