one more nursery school post
I am curious - what age will you send your kids to Nursery school - or for the BTDT moms what age did you send them.
How many hours a day and days a week are the programs?
BTDT moms - any advice to offer when looking for a school?

Alex has been in daycare since she was 10 weeks old. She goes full-time - from about 8am to 5pm everyday. Really, the most important thing to me was the general atmosphere - what were the teachers like? Is there a lot of turnover? It's better when there are teachers that have been there for a long time - it says something about hte school, and it's also a better environment for the kids to have the stability. Do they have activites? How is it structured? I wanted a school that wasn't TOO structured, but did intersperse daily activities. So, although my daughter's class generally takes a nap from 12-2pm, if Alex is sleepy she takes a nap earlier, or if she's hungry at 11 instead of 12pm, they'll give her lunch, etc. They have music classes, art classes, and sign language classes weekly. Also look at the ratios - make sure they keep to them. I like that my daughter is in a class with 4 other babies her age, with 2 teachers.
What really sold us on our daycare is that there are about 4 teachers that have been there for about 20 years - they LOVE their job, they LOVE babies. They have fun activites, but aren't inflexible and do not mandate that each and every baby fit into a schedule. For us, it was important that Alex learns how to speak hebrew, so part of the reason why we chose our school is because they have a hebrew immersion program. Last, food is a big concern to us, so we chose a program that requires the parents to bring food for the child. Most of the schools that provide food in our neighborhood provide hot dogs, chicken fingers, pizza, etc. I wasn't too thrilled about that.
Hope that helps!

I'm planning to send her when she's 3. I guess if she is potty trained and seems ready maybe at 2&1/2 but before that I feel is kind of young.

Emma started preschool in September she is 4. I was home with her and Jeremy so I found no reason to HAVE to send her.
Emma goes to a local ecumenical school for 3 days a week for 2 hours and 15 minutes.
When I was looking for schools I asked friends who's kids went there. Its also a small town so I went to school with the teachers mom

My daughter started school at 2 yrs. 4 months. She is in a private Christian Academy. 2 days a week from 9-1pm. she loves going. It's 10 children per class.
Classroom size Price per month for tuition Academic scores for Pre-K Teacher qualifications/crudentials Feedback from BTDT mom's who have their children attend the school Research to narrow the schools down and an interview of the head master/teachers. ETA: Willing to work with you if you are PT and anything else. loving /caring attitudes
My daughter did not have to be PT'd while attending until 3yrs., however she was PT'd by 2.6 (2 months later)

Nate started day care when he was 12 months. Even though I call it day care, there are three teachers (and 1 PT helper) there for 10 kids. It's a structured program where they have reading time, music, go for walks, nap time, etc.... The also provide him with all his food. All I bring is diapers and change of clothes when he needs them.

Re: one more nursery school post
We will be sending Emily next Fall when she'll be 3 yrs 2 mths old.
We're sending her to a private christian school in our town 2 AMs a week for 5 hrs total.
Our daughter has severe food allergies so for me, it was most important to find a school that REALLY understood our needs to to keep her safe with snacks, etc. Otherwise I just wanted a family-oriented, friendly and welcoming environment.

Re: one more nursery school post
I have been through this with two children who are now 9 and almost 4. I work part time, two days per week. With both my girls they were at home until the age of two--with a sitter. With my older daughter, I used a franchised child care program - Tutor Time in Smithtown and was generally happy. However, as time went on I came to realize that my experience was unusual in that there was very little teacher turnover at this center. In fact my daughter's two year old teacher became her three year old teacher. But toward our last few months there things began to change. I stuck it out because her pre K teacher was wonderful but the managemnet became difficult and the owner was rarely available. With my younger daughter I put her in Tutor Time in Commack- different owner who owns the East Northport Center and has a good reputation. However, I seriously disliked the director and had a bad experience there and wound up pulling her out in less than two months. The turnover in that period was unbelievable and the director was difficult. She wound up in a program that I am thrilled with but ironically would probably not have considered with my older child. It is a smaller program but the teachers have been there forever and take such an interest in the children. With my older daughter I was SO impressed with the newness of the building and toys etc... However, I have come to understand that blocks are blocks and toys are toys. So my advice to you would be to tour the school and ask everyone you meet "how long have you worked here?" I truly believe that we get too worked up about academics and that children need to be happy and playing for a good part of the day. Both my girls are "bright" children, my older one is in enrichment. However, I believe that has very little to do with school per se and more to do with who they are and all of the things they are exposed to. My little one now attends school two full days and two mornings and the fact that she is thrilled to be there is the only things that matters to me. Sorry this became SO long winded just the perspective of a mother whose done this two different ways.

Re: one more nursery school post
Nicholas started Nursery School in Sept. 2005 when he was 3 1/2 years old.
(He is now 4 1/2 and in Pre-K)
He attends a catholic school that also has a toddler program for 2-3 year olds, but I didn't send him to that.
The nursery program (ages 3-4) was 3 days a week from 8:30- 11:00.
The Pre-K program which he currently attends is 4 days a week from 8:30- 11:00.
He LOVED school from the very first day he attended.
It's so great for their socialization skills, nevermind the cognitive development.
