Online Sales Tax for NY residents

Just an FYI, all website are now charging NY sales tax as of today. I think some people might think its just for Amazon.com but its for all online websites that sell to ny residents.

You were charged sales tax only if the business had a physical brick and mortar store in NY. So if you bought something online from say Target, since there are physical Target stores in NY you would be charged sales tax.

For stores that did not physically exist in NY, they did not charge sales tax.

Today a law went into effect, sales tax everywhere - whether there is a brick and mortar store or not.

I hear ya on that one!!!

But that stinks! I never noticed I wasn't being charged, though I rarely order online.

ETA: MIL is going to FREAK OUT!!! She is a shopaholic, and will order just about anything from furniture and clothing to bug wands and bread knives

I am curious about that too. I sell things occasionally and I don't want to have to collect, report & submit sales tax from these sales.

I am not charging sales tax- I would not even know how to go about it

I think that is more for stores that sell on ebay- not people

Re: Online Sales Tax for NY residents

You all might flame me for this one but ...

As someone who has a brick & mortar store on LI that often is in competition with online vendors, I think this is FABULOUS news!!!!!!!!!!

It levels the playing field a bit for the store owners trying to make a living ....

Its not like the store owners get to KEEP the tax that's being collected Chat Icon

Re: Online Sales Tax for NY residents

I rarely shop online, so this doesn't really have much of an impact for me. I'm a traditional brick and mortar store shopper!!

Re: Online Sales Tax for NY residents

I don't care for it but understand why it will be done.

For years, people bought online without paying tax. Meanwhile, we were "supposed" to declare our purchases when doing our tax return (tax people please tell me I am right????). But NOBODY was declaring their online purchases.

The issue arised several years ago when I lived in the South (NC). There was a $15 automatic amount to be declared on the tax return if you knew you had purchased online but could not "remember" the total amount. You did not have to get tagged for the $15 if you really did not buy anything online.

There was a thing a couple of years ago where there was a line item on the NYS tax return that calculated an estimated sales tax based on income.
