Open Play - Gym in Port Jeff Station
Spins Gym in Port Jefferson Station has open play classes Wednesdays between 4-5:30. Pay as you go: $10 a class. Sounds perfect since this is the time frame that DS seems to be at his sensory worst!

Is it open play for kids with special needs, or just anyone in general?
Not sure how old your child is, but the Land and Sea Sports Club offers special needs gymnastics, free on Saturdays at a gym across from Safari Adventure. It's for ages 4 and up.

It is open to all however, it IS geared for children with sensory issues/special needs. I told her that DS was just over 2 and on the spectrum and she said this would be perfect for him.
It is hard to find a special program for DS' age (27 mo)

We used to go there. We had to pay out of pocket though. I think it was $180 for 6 weeks. It was okay, but it was all special needs children, no NT kids, so the socialization aspect was limited. Do they have NT kids in your group?

What is NT--non-therapy? I don't think there are any non-therapy kids, but the group is a good mix with DS as a speech delay, another boy who gets OT but speaks very well, a couple of little girls where their problems aren't evident who may be NT. They all play with each other very well, no one is violent, and I love that the teacher doesn't force them to sit--so long as they are playing with each other, all are happy.
I do think it would be perfect for the OP's son if he is on the spectrum. Though I wouldn't pay out of pocket (I'm cheap like that  ).

I have expressed my concern regarding DS' sensory issues. I have been told that any sensory issues DS may or may not have would be addressed in his ABA therapy. It has been highly frustrating to say the least. Both his therapists and the agency representative have indicated that he would not qualify for any OT based on his sporadic sensory issues, that sensory issues that do not impede his daily life (ex. feeding) would not get him services. I looked into NY Therapy gym on a private level, which my insurance would pay for 100% minus my copay, but NY Therapy does not take insurance. If I went to them it would be considered out of network and I would have to self pay and then submit claim forms to be reimbursed.

This infuriates me ! ABA therapist are Special Education teachers with training in applied behavior analysis. They do not have any background in the sensory system, neurological system, or even the anatomy and how it develops. They are not occupational therapists, or speech pathologists (healthcare professionals).
I am so bothered by this because as a teacher myself I had little to no knowledge about sensory processing disorder, motor planning, etc. There is so much more to learning than "teaching", or manipulating things through behaviorism. If a child can't sit still it could be that his core is not strong enough, and he/she could be in a state of fatigue. If a child can't draw a circle by age three it could be that he/she doesn't have proper shoulder stability, wrist control or pincer grasp. If a child can't clap their hands or stomp their feet doesn't mean they don't know how to immitate, their bilateral coordination may not be developed enough to do so. If a child is slamming themselves into a sofa has little spatial awareness. If they are jumping up and down for hours before going to bed, what on earth is an ABA therapist going to do about that ? Especially an ABA therapist who is not consulting with an OT on the child's team.
This also relates to how they cut out speech for children and try to push ABA.
A mommy and me class at NYTPS should definitely be funded by EI. They are EI providers. It wouldn't even be listed as an OT session because it's not individualized therapy. Part of EI should be community outings and socialization.
I was never told about all these classes that my dd could have had access to last year. I paid for things out of pocket that weren't the best fit for her because my EIOD never informed me of these classes and the agencies we dealt with were so small they didn't provide them.
Oh and ETA, an ABA therapist should not be commenting on what services your ds would qualify for or not. The EIOD, should assist you in getting every type of evaluation that is available to you. If you haven't done an OT eval, get one !!!!! But furthermore, ask for a mommy and me class to be put on your IFSP !!!!!
