Opinion on siding

We are going to re-side our house next year (not in this year's budget) and DH & I can't agree on what to do. He wants to side the whole house, I'm not sure I want to cover up the brick in the front, although I'm not a huge fan of painted brick.

Here's a picture of the house after the landscaper ripped out all the old bushes, but we've powerwashed and painted the brick since then, so it doesn't look quite so white trash. Chat Icon

Thanks!

Re: Opinion on siding

I hate painted brick - I had to paint the outside of my parents house before they moved, because the paint was chipping off...So I would say to vinyl side the whole house

Thanks. I was thinking that it would make the house a little unique compared to the rest of the block since everyone else is siding over the brick. But most people are doing white or the cream diagonal siding, so I'm thinking of going with gray shaker tile on the front and then gray siding on the rest, so that should help make a difference.

Thanks!

Re: Opinion on siding

Well I love brick 1000% more then siding.. Im just not a fan of painted brick. What if you power washed the paint off of the brick and left it, it's natural color??

I was thinking the same thing! Get that paint off the brick. YOu are lucky to have brick on your house. It's so expensive to add brick or stone.

We tried powerwashing it off with a VERY high power machine that we rented and it did nothing. So we were stuck painting it again. Maybe there's a product out there that does it? But it's been painted multiple times over the past 50+ years. One of our neighbors has been in their house since it was built and told us the original owner painted the brick.

Re: Opinion on siding

We are siding the house now and we have partial brick. It is peeling off though so we are looking into stone face. I know siding the whole house will be much cheaper but like you, I don't want it to look like every single other house on the block...

If you can get the paint off and the brickface is in good shape, I would keep it.

We are also doing the shingle-style on the front with the dutch on the rest of the house... siding just has no personality, but it is low maintenance so....

Re: Opinion on siding

You DONT want to side over brick- do you know how much it cost to brick a house? a lot of $$$$$$$$ way more than siding!!! you need a sand blaster not a power washer to get the paint off- you want to hire a pro to do this b/c it is very messy and you dont want to inhale those fumes or dust! DEF sand blast the brick back to its natural color and leave it and side around the brick.

edited to say do a shaker shingle in the front and regular on the sides and back.

Re: Opinion on siding

I love brick, but not painted brick. Since its painted, I vote just side over the whole house.

You know what I love instead of siding is the cedar shake impressions. This is what we're putting on our house next spring.

yes, the cedar shaker shingles are sooo pretty the cedar can throw you off- they make them in plastic too not only wood cedar. we got that on our house just in the front b/c it is expensive.

My mom did the shaker tiles on the front of her house. It looks really nice.

I'll never understand why so many people paint over brick. And in our den we have this brick wall but it's not pretty brick it's this fugly tan color. Who picks this stuff out?

I guess I'll look into sand blasting it, but I'm not hopeful since there are so many layers of paint. Ugh.

Thanks.

Re: Opinion on siding

Yeah cedar shake impressions are not wood - they are a type of plastic and are zero maintenace like siding. Yu never have to paint them.
