Opinions on bedrooms on both floors?

How do you feel about having bedrooms on 2 floors (either master on 1st, or master on 2nd and say 1 or 2 of the smaller bedrooms on the first floor)?

I started the house hunt very opposed to it...I grew up in colonials with all the bedrooms on the 2nd floor, and feel like I would feel safer when we have kids with all the bedrooms on one floor. DH grew up in a Cape with the master on the 1st floor and sees no problem with it. The split ranch we saw yesterday had one of the smaller bedrooms on the first floor, and the master and one additional large bedroom on the second.

So, opinions on bedrooms on both floors, especially from parents?

I grew up in a cape with parents on 1st floor, and me and my sister on the 2nd. No issues for us, and I'd certainly not let it affect my house hunt now.

I like having all the bedrooms on the same floor, however if I loved everything else about the house it wouldnt be a deal breaker.

i grew up in a cape with the master bedroom upstairs, and the other 2 bedrooms on the 1st floor. there were no issues with it... we moved there when i was 2 and my sister was a few months old. i think it helped that the master bedroom was directly above the other 2 bedrooms, and not on the other side of the house so it made it easier for my parents to hear us. i think if you just get a good monitor when you have kids, it'll be fine! lol the only thing i don't like about it now when DH and i stay there is that my parents get up really early and becasue they are above us, we hear them waking up and walking around up there and it wakes us up, too! LOL

Re: Opinions on bedrooms on both floors?

I grew up in a ranch, so obviously we were all on the same floor. Personally, I prefer all the bedrooms to be on the same floor. I'm in a split and right now it's nice because I have half of my clothes in a spare bedroom which is across from me.

It wouldn't had been a deal breaker but now that I am in the house, it's nice having all the sleeping spaces on the same level.

Re: Opinions on bedrooms on both floors?

our house is an expanded ranch so the original 3 bedrooms are on the first floor & the master & another bedroom are on the second floor.
We have two older children & I think the layout is ideal. When our kids have sleepovers they can stay up late & not keep us awake. Our guest room is also on the first floor so our guests can go right into the kitchen in the morning if they want without even seeing us.
Our whole second floor is "the no-kid zone"Chat Icon its our master bedroom & bath, our exercise room in the smaller bedroom & my craft room/home office in the loft area that looks over the great room. Its also great when we have big parties, there is really no reason for anyone to go upstairs since we have two bathrooms on the mainfloor. if we had a baby or very young child the bedroom that is next to the master would be an ideal nursery.

Re: Opinions on bedrooms on both floors?

We have our master br on the 1st floor, and DC br on the 2nd floor. When we redo the house, all the brs will be on the same floor. I like the idea of the brs on the 2nd floor, so when guests are over, they can have free range over the 1st floor, which is the "public" floor, and the 2nd floor is the "private" floor, for the most part.

Either way is fine, though.

I prefer all of the bedrooms upstairs, only because I am messy and I hate to make my bed! Chat Icon

Re: Opinions on bedrooms on both floors?

When we looked at homes, I saw all styles of homes, but I knew I wouldn't settle for anything less then a Victorian/Colonial as that is what I was used to growing up.

However, I saw some splits wth a small bedroom on the middle section and the rest upstairs. You have to go with what feels comfortable for you and your DH. There are plenty of houses on the market and as you continue to search, if you continue to compare other homes to the one your speaking of on this post, take another look at it and see if you could see yourself living there and making a home for yourself.

Good luck!

Re: Opinions on bedrooms on both floors?

I gew up in a cape and my brother slept on the first floor, so its not strange to me.
and when we looked at houses (in NC) there were so many houses being built with the master on the first floor.
we have 4 bedrooms on the 2nd floor; including the master; and our study on the 1st floor is an optional 5th bedroom.

Re: Opinions on bedrooms on both floors?

My dream house is a large Dutch Colonial - But for the areas we wanted to live in, they were over $1 million -
So, I'm in a cape. I REALLY wanted all of the bedrooms on the 2nd floor b/c that's what I was used to growing up, but now I'm kind of thinking we'll finish the 2nd floor as our Master suite and put in a bathroom (it's currently just attic space) and leave the 2 main floor bedrooms for the kiddies whenever they should come. - I don't really like the MB on the 1st floor, although I see A LOT of houses that way now. -

As a parent of younger children, I wouldn't feel comfortable with it.

I have a hi-ranch, and 3 bedrooms are on the upper level and one on the lower level. I hate that the bedroom are on the same level as the LR, DR and kitchen. Our next home will have all bedrooms on a second floor. No compromising in that area ever again!

I don't mind bedrooms on both floors as long as the master is on the main floor.
Just my personal preference.

I agree. I grew up in a cape with my parents, grandmother and 3 sisters so needless to say, we always had bedrooms of all the floors. I like the idea of having all the bedrooms together but I can live with the house if it's not that way. Good luck!

we have one bedroom on the ground floor (we made it a den) and we're fine w/it. i never thought about it though until you posted this question - i can't see it ever being a deal breaker for me.

Re: Opinions on bedrooms on both floors?

I never really thought about it. We have two bedrooms on the first floor and two bedrooms on the second floor. I think it's considered a Hi-ranch. We use the one bedroom downstairs as a guest room which we like because it's separated from us so we have privacy when guests are over.
