Organ donation -- can a drowning victim donate their organs?
I may not keep this post up for long, still in shock. My cousin died today in a drowning accident (trying to save his daughter - so sad). My uncle wants to push for his organs to be donated but we're hearing that because his body was in the water for a prolonged time his major organs may no longer be eligible for donation.
Any insight from the LIF people? I think organ donation may help our family cope with this better 
Update - Thanks for everyone's thoughts & prayers. It's just so sad. Still waiting to hear more details about what happened. His daughter is OK (she knows he drowned but doesn't realize it means forever), but his son turns 21 today. And my uncle JUST gave them the boat this May -- so upsetting to everyone.

I have no idea but I wanted to offer prayers and condolences for your loss. It's such a tragedy but your family is amazing for thinking of others in this horrific time. I am so sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm not 100% sure but from what I gathered from a quick google search, drowning victims have been organ donors but I guess it may depend on how long he was brain dead.

I'm so sorry, what a tragedy
Hospital staff are not allowed to recommend organ donation to a family, but can contact the right people if requested by the family.
There are a team of people from the organ donation network, nurses and other staff, who will request blood work and other information to determine if the patient is a candidate. Even if organs are not able to be taken, there are things like corneas that can be taken after cardiac death.

I think it depends on how long he was in the water for and how brain dead he was the hospital should know more

It depends on the situation honestly. I would imagine that at least something could be donated, but perhaps not everything. There are a lot of factors in this to include how long he went without o2 and so on. I am so very very sorry for your loss. My sister died 15 years ago and we donated her organs. It made a horrible time a bit better to know she was living on. She was in a car accident and was declared brain dead so this is a different situation.

I am sorry for your loss. I would think that there are organizations that can answer the question very easily as soon as you say you are interested. If you do still need info, FM me. I know someone who advocates around the US for organ donation and I can see if she knows.

I am so sorry! How tragic!
I don't really know about organ donation in this situation, but you can donate after as well. I had a tissue transplant from a cadaver.
