Organic farm share/CSA/ co-op on LI?
Hi gals! I tried to do a search for a topic we had earlier this year that had a bunch of links to Farm Shares/ Co-ops on LI, but I cannot find it.
Can anyone bump it or recommend their farmshare/co-op that has organics? Also, some of the ones I have seen are not Organic fruits but "responsibly grown" fruits? Do any CSAs offer organic fruits?
TIA

Re: Organic farm share/CSA/ co-op on LI?
We're splitting a veggie co-op from Golden Earthworm out east. website Their veggies are organic. They have a partnership with Briermere (sp?) to do a fruit co-op. Their fruit is not "organic", but as you said, "responsibly grown". My SIL contacted them about the fruit part, and they said (again, just what 1 person said, not that it's 100% accurate) that it's very hard to grow fruit organically on LI b/c of the soil, etc. I DO wish it was organic, but am comfortable with this situation overall, because Golden Earthworm is paired with Briemere and GE is very trustworthy in terms of organics, in my experience & research.
So, we're splitting the fruit & veggie co-ops w/SIL & BIL because supposedly you get a ton of stuff. There are numerous pick-up locations around LI, you pick up every week. Check out the website...they give samples of what you're likely going to get each time.
I'm very excited about it!!

Re: Organic farm share/CSA/ co-op on LI?
Thank you! This is one of the farms we were looking at. I tried to find out exactly what makes the fruits ineligible for the USDA Org Cert, but it does not specify. I know it is harder to control the soil and water for tress, and the water table on LI is right below the planting line, so I assumed that was the reason.....
I was going to do a partial, but they don't seem to do every other week....
I'd love to share with anyone who is also interested in this CSA!

We are doing one with Garden of Eve in Riverhead. They have 1/2 shares for $250ish.
The fruits come from Briermere and they use low amounts of pesticides. That is why they aren't organic.

The third is in Bayshore, It's called Organics today, but it looks like you pay weekly, rather than subscribe to a full harvest like other CSAs.

I know, it is a lot of $ and a lot of food (supposedly) for a small family like ours too. That's why I'm so thankful we're able to share. Hopefully you find something that works for you

Re: Organic farm share/CSA/ co-op on LI?
We've joined the Golden Earthworm also. As a previous poster mentioned they have a partnership with Briermere Farms for fruit. Although Briermere isnt' certified organic they are very close to it. This is waht was listed on the site:
"Long Island is a difficult region for tree fruit production because of the high humidity levels which contribute to fungus disease pressure, and can decimate fruit quality (and sometimes the whole tree). At Briermere Farms, insecticides and fungicides are used only when needed to produce marketable fruit. The tree fruit is sprayed with 1 or 2 synthetic insecticides and fungicides at some point typically earlier in the season. No herbicides are used underneath the trees, and on-farm produced compost from leaves is the only fertilizer/nutrient source for their fruit crops."

what do they mean when they say full share vs 1/2 share? TIA! It depends on the farm. I think Garden of Eve is a full pick up every other week. Some of the others have a 1/2 pick up every week.
Most of the CSAs I looked at offer 10 - 15 lbs of fruit & veg a week, which is a lot, IMO, so they offer a 1/2 share plan.

I recently found this website via another board I'm on. Helps you find farmers' markets, family farms, and other sources of sustainably grown food nationwide. You can search by zip. Local Harvest
