Re: Organic Moms-Meal ideas

i avoid HFCS as well. I find that anything bought at Trader Joes doesn't have HFCS in it- so most meals come from there for the kids.

Lets see- we use their turkey meatballs, chicken nuggets, waffles, eggs, cereals. Veggies I sometimes buy at Stop and Shop.

So- the kids get fruit, waffles, oatmeal for breakfast.

Lunch- chicken, veggies, meatballs, rice and beans, soups, PB&J, cheese and crackers, I also buy these organic spinach pancakes......

Dinner- something else off of the dinner menu!

Re: Organic Moms-Meal ideas

My DD is 20 months. We dont serve all organic meals - but we try.

bkfast meals -

scrambled egg whites (we get organic, cage free eggs - horizon brand)

yogurt (Stonyfield)
fresh fruit
granola
waffles (organic brand from whole foods)
Kashi foodstuffs - bars, etc.

lunch and dinner meals -

Annie's Naturals mac n' cheese
some prepared meals from Earth's Best
pasta with sauce (usually homemade or I use the brand 365 - from stop and shop)
sweet potato (DD likes them baked/mashed/roasted)
sweet potato with quinoa mash (quinoa is a supergrain)
veggie burgers - I forgot the brand - Dr. Sager's, i think?
turkey meatballs

We just see what she likes and go from there - pretty much any meal can be prepared organically.

You can buy the Annie's mac and cheese and other products at Stop N Shop, Fairway, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and I think Waldbaums.
The Dr. Praeger's spinach pancakes you can get at Stop N Shop, Whole Foods, Fairway. Whole Foods and Fairway also have a broader selection of Dr. Praegers and Annie's products.

Re: Organic Moms-Meal ideas

Alex is 3 years old - for breakfast, she usually eats organic, plain yogurt with organic, unsweetened applesauce mixed in, with some chopped banana or blueberries. That, or kashi cereal with organic soymilk.

Lunch, I often give her leftovers from dinner the night before, or cottage cheese, hummus with some chopped veggies, avocado, some organic string cheese, and a piece of fruit.

Snacks usually include fresh fruit, something homebaked, crackers with cheese, cheerios, raisins, cranberries, veggies.

For dinner, she eats what we eat. We don't eat meat, but we do eat 2-3 servings of fish per week, usually broiled tilapia or salmon with whole wheat couscous and a veggie on the side. If not that, we have falafel or omeletttes with hummus, pita and israeli salad, shakshuka (israeli dish with eggs and red sauce), vegetarian chili, bean soup, veggie meatballs with whole wheat pasta, veggie burgers, veggie hotdogs, etc...

Hubby is Israeli so he makes a big batch of hummus and tahina every week. If we get lazy, we'll just pick up some Sabra at the supermarket.

I have oodles and oodles of good baked recipes - you name it, I have it. My suggestion is go to Amazon.com and look up "healthy baking" cookbooks. I bought a few cookbooks that focus on low sugar, low fat, whole wheat baking. My DD LOVES everything I bake for her...this week I made a yummy carrot cake Chat Icon

Re: Organic Moms-Meal ideas

Many of the name-brand organic products are a bit more expensive but I find it's worth it. I think the exception are the TJ's products as you mentioned and also the 365 brand from Whole Foods (their generic brand). I believe Stop N Shop also makes their own generic organic brand which is pretty good.

I find it's worth the trip to Whole Foods (Jericho or Manhasset) or Fairway (Plainview) if you live in the area. They have a huge selection and I've had a lot of success with finding products for my DS. DS just turned 2 and is a pretty picky eater, so finding things that he likes can be tough.

ETA: I do not buy all organic because that would get really pricey! But I do try and make our meals (especially DS) as organic as possible.

Re: Organic Moms-Meal ideas

ETA - something to think about - every year we join an organic farm cooperative. They deliver fresh, organic fruits and veggies from local organic farms, to our area, once a week, for about 7 months of the year. It's more than enough to feed a family of 4 for each week. During those months, we eat a ridiculous amount of fresh, organic produce.

They also have the option of ordering organic dairy, egg and meat products, for an extra fee.

Re: Organic Moms-Meal ideas

They deliver to a local synogogue and we pick up the food from there every week. It starts in March, I believe, and ends in November. Costs $575 for the entire season.

We live in the Philly area, so the place we use won't be of much help to you, but I do know that LI has some farm cooperatives. Just google CSA organic farm cooperative and you should be able to find something.

Re: Organic Moms-Meal ideas

We get a large grocery bag full of fruits and veggies each week. Most of the time it's just too much and some of it either rots, I freeze it, or give some away to our neighbor. It's all seasonal though, and you don't get to pick what you get - it really all depends on the farms and what they produced in abundance that week.

We used to belong to a farm cooperative through just one farm - it wasn't such a good idea because if that farm takes a hit because of the weather, for whatever reason, the variety is "eh". The cooperative we belong to now pools produce from a variety of farms in the area. So, even if one farm isn't doing so well, we still get a nice variety of produce from the other farms.

Most of these places have the option of doing a half share - you get half the amount for half the price. A lot of people start out that way, to get an idea for what it's all about.

What really helped for us is I bought a couple of seasonal produce cookbooks. So even if I'm totally unfamiliar with one of the veggies they give us, it forces me to find a recipe and incorporate it into our diet for that week. I really do think this is one of the reasons why my daughter is so fond of, almost borderline obsessed with, vegetables.

This is what I want, my kid to love veggies and fresh fruits. I give him unsweetened applesauce, he loves bananas, peches, pears, loves them. He also loves broccoli, peas, stringbeans...im gonna try to make spinach pancakes with the TJ mix, ill put in my own spainach. We do pancakes but we dont use syrup. How is real maple syrup??? Healthy or no?
