orthodontist estimates
If anyone wouldn't mind sharing what their kids ortho cost and what they needed, i'd appreciate it.
My son is 12. He's been going to the orthodontist since he was 10. He's been on 'watch' every 6 months and looked good. Now today, they tell me he needs 24 months of braces and $8k later...
i'm a little annoyed. Seems crazy to go from he looks good and might not need them, to now 2 years worth. Apparently his teeth are straight but a few of them need to be adjusted on their position where they sit on the bottom teeth.
I also had my 8 year old evaluated and they recommend a stinger i think it's called. He has a small mouth and it's to help expand it. That's $2k.
i'm wondering if it's worth getting a 2nd opinion.

Re: orthodontist estimates
I brought my older dd to orthodontist at 10 back in February and she needed a palate expander and will need braces and the price was in the $6000 range for both, I think the expander was 1500 and the braces were the rest...that’s plain metal braces...ceramic was more and Invisalign was the most expensive.
ETA: I also got a quote for myself for just Metal braces, looked it up and it’s $4500, seems your place is high, but I’m in Queens. My 8 year old is on a 6 month “watch” right now.
The palate expander was put on in February and I had to turn it for 15 days and now it’s just there, needs to stay for 6-7 months...not sure how soon after that comes off before braces come on.

Both my daughters had palette expanders and top/bottom braces on for about 2 years. Cost was $7000-$7500 each. Best money spent as their teeth are perfect now!

My son just had a palette expander taken out. Cost was $1400 bc I paid in cash so I received a discount.
He's now in a watch pattern to see how the rest of his adult teeth come in and if he'll need braces. They told me that his bite is a little deep, but nothing crazy. As of right now, we have the option for braces or not, but it really all depends on how his adult teeth come in over the next few months.
ETA: he's 9.5 right now, will be 10 in the fall.

Re: orthodontist estimates
Get another opinion. I took my son to 3 orthodontists before choosing. They all recommended the same treatment, but the billing and final cost varied greatly at all 3. Obviously we went with the one that gave us the best price.

Re: orthodontist estimates
Question- does anyone's insurance cover braces at all? Our dental plan covers a portion of it for children up to a certain age (they do not cover adult braces). Up to a few grand I believe depending on the issue.
DD definitely needs them- her overbite is insane from being a pacifier addict as a baby and toddler. But they are telling us it's too early (she was 9 when she was last looked at by an orthodontist) and she need to lose more baby teeth.

Yes my dental insurance gives $2500 per kid towards their braces. My husbands gives $1380 per kid and then we have a $2000 stipend each year that he gets for dental/vision that we can use towards it as well. So I’m thinking of adding my husband on to my dental plan so that we can use the bulk of his stipdent (we use it for his dental and both of our vision/contacts).

My insurance currently covers $0 for orthodontics but DH has up to $2300 I believe. I was hopeful I would have orthodontic coverage at my new company because I quickly maxed out for DS 1 at my old company with a palatal expander but I don't.

Yes I took out a separate dental plan and they cover $3000 toward orthodontist per person(even adults).

Where did you find info about this separate dental plan? We will need braces next year.

It’s what was available through my job...besides the regular medical insurance (Which doesn’t cover orthodontist) they offer some separate dental and vision plans, so when we had open season I picked a dental plan.

I believe flex spending can also be applied towards braces.

Re: orthodontist estimates
My 11 year old doesn’t have enough room in his mouth for 2 teeth to come in. They have been monitoring this for at least the past year. He’s about to get a palette expander for 10 months and likely top braces right now. He’ll get bottom braces later on. They said to expect everything to take up to 3 years. The total cost is $6500 with insurance covering $2000.

Between my husband and I we carry 3 dental insurances. All 3 cover ortho. We found a dr who would bill all 3 and paid $300 out of pocket for my son’s braces, not including retainers.

That is awesome! We have PBA dental insurance so we have to see dentists and orthos who take it. But now that DH is retired his benefits changed and I feel like we get less towards ortho than if he were still on the job. However anything they give us will be a help so I am not complaining.

One of our insurances is also through the PD (retired as well) and our experience was the same. It definitely seemed like there was more money toward ortho when active than retired. Disappointing!

Re: orthodontist estimates
It was crystal clear my DD was going to need braces several years ago. She had an ortho consult, which confirmed what we knew. We were given the option to start right away, or wait (no monitoring). We decided at age 10/11 she couldn't say no, but at 14 she might. She has 6 months left (maybe a little more due to Covid and the inability to do 2 adjustments while things were shut down). Our insurance paid $2k, ultimately out of pocket will be $3k (we are on monthly payment plan).
Price includes all x-rays, molds, braces, adjustments, and upper & lower retainers when braces come off.
