Orthopedic Surgeon

Hi All
I am looking to get a second opinion for my son who made need surgery in a few weeks for hip displasia. I am already going to Cohen's LIJ and seeing the chief of surgery. I am very happy there but I do want to get a second opinion in the city. I am not sure whether to go to Morgan Stanley's, The Hospital for Special Surgery or the Hospital for bone & joint disease. There are top doctor's at all three. Does anyone have experience? The main reason i am looking for a second opinion is because a family friend had a similar situation where Cohen's was pushing surgery. They got a second opinion in NYC and did not end up getting the surgery and in the long run their daughter's hip healed. This is going back 23 years ago so that doctor is not around. If my son needs surgery he would be in a body cast for 3-4 months causing a lot of gross motor delays.

TIA!!

Are they unwilling to try the pavlik harness first to see if it makes any difference? DD wore it from 3 days old until 12 weeks and for another 6 weeks just at night. They did ultrasounds every 3 weeks to check her progress and within the first 3 weeks it was making a big difference. DD did have some gross motor delays even just being treated for that short period of time but it was nothing terrible and she's pretty much all caught up now at 2.5. My cousin's daughter had a mild case and they only treated it by double diapering her for a few months. Another cousin of mine had it many years ago and it was caught much later so she needed a hard cast for several months. I think a lot depends on how early it's caught and how severe a case it is. However I would definitely go for a second opinion if you would feel better about that. My newborn is getting checked in a few weeks and I already was considering getting a second opinion if they tell me she has it. We're in suffolk so I don't have anyone to recommend and am not thrilled with the orthopedist we see anyway.

He started with the pavlik harness at 1 month old. He is now 3 months old and was switched to the hard brace (Pavlik harness did not work) As of now.. this isnt working either. The Dr is willing to wait 3 more weeks in this hard brace. :(. He will need to be put under anesthesia and that is what scares me. He already had 1 major surgery at 4 days old. He is fine now but I just get nervous with that.. and how it could impact him.

Uggh, that stinks. Hopefully the brace will start working and he won't need surgery. DD was very close to needing anesthesia at a week old so I definitely understand that fear. I was so relieved when we were able to avoid it. GL

Re: Orthopedic Surgeon

My son saw Dr. Raggio at the hospital for special surgery as a second opinion for torticollis, so not the same problem but I thought she was great! Very thorough and child friendly. She ended up not recommending surgery as the first Dr at Stony Brook did but we did see her for follow ups every 6 months for 2 years. I would definitely recommend her.
