Orton-Gillingham

Can anyone give me insight or a review on the Orton-Gillingham program? I am not familiar with it at all. How does it work? Do you like/dislike it? Is there something out there that works better? What grade levels does it suit best?

Re: Orton-Gillingham

i did it for a short time as a teaching assistant. It was several years ago but this is what I remember from it.. I believe they spell the words by standing up and taping and saying the letters of the sight words down/up their arm. (Fundations they sky write each letter and say the word) I know they have a book they write the words down in and they put a plastic sheet that looks like graph paper but the wholes are empty so when you write with it under the paper it is bumpy (if that makes sense).

I am not sure if this was part of O/G but we use to give the students the sight words in bubble letters. they would color them in and then cut out and glue in the correct order.

I know teach fundations and like it much better than O/G. it is very repetative. there are keyword/sounds for each letter to help students remember the sound the letters make. It also teaches rules like glued/welded sounds ("ang" is said /ang/, each letter is NOT tapped out ang is basically one sound) and "magic e" which is called vowel-consonant-e.

Fundations I believe is grades k-2 or maybe 3rd. but then they have an version called "wilson" that is for upper grades. I have also seen this taught in middle school to special ed students who had reading disabliities and it was very successful
