OUCH - re: shipping charges!
I was SO happy to have purchased all the kids' Christmas gifts before Thanksgiving - then this weekend I packed up two gifts that I had to ship to California and each package cost $30 to ship!!!! And this was the CHEAPEST way (parcel post) to ship them with the Post Office!
Surcharges for size. I normally buy from Toys R Us online and ship directly to the kids in Cali, but I was shopping early this year and didn't want them to get them so quickly and have their parents store them (they are large-ish size). Lesson learned - next year buy these kids' gifts in December and ship from the store. I'm sure the shipping would have been way less than $60!

Re: OUCH - re: shipping charges!
UPS is way cheaper than the Post Office on just about everything shipping.
The only thing USPS is good for are really small packages and heavy items that can fit in their flat rate boxes.

OMG do NOT tell me that!!!! We had a package that we were taking to UPS after our stop to the post office and DH was like - hey you think it would be cheaper to take these other boxes to UPS? Nahhhh.
Thanks for the info!

One was like 18x30" and the other was just slightly smaller. So I think yes, they were big, but DANGGGGGG. $60 to ship two presents? And here I thought the post office was the inexpensive way to ship!

Yeah, I actually bought these in the store when I did all my Christmas shopping before Thanksgiving. Yup, going back to shopping online for next year - at least for these two kids!

I always found UPS more expensive than the post office.
To the OP. I know the feeling. I have to ship to Alaska. NEVER cheap. And NOBODY offers free shipping to Alaska. It sucks! But I hate just buying a gift card and telling them to buy something for themselves. So I suck it up once a year.
ETS: I even tried doing the "ship to store" option at Wal-mart. And of course AK does not participate in that

This isn't true. Last Wednesday I shipped a box to my dad in Utah and took it to both UPS and USPS to see how much it would be. UPS ground shipping was more than USPS parcel post, and that was even with the post office's extra fees b/c the box was big and "non-machinable". They were both estimated to get there by this Wednesday.

Re: OUCH - re: shipping charges!
I always use UPS because the post office chipped me one time and I was not happy. It was like $10 cheaper to send the same package i was sending out.

Ok, that makes me feel a bit better - the boxes we shipped also had the extra fees because they were "non-machinable".

USPS cheaper to Utah? Impossible.
Give me the box dimensions and weight. I guarantee UPS will be cheaper every single time.
I would never ship anything Parcel Post anyways. If I go USPS I go Priority minimum.
