OUCH!!!!- Pumping moms, what am I doing wrong?
My nipple is seriously jacked up, and I believe its from my pump..
Its only the one nipple and it looks like it has paper cuts all over it...
Hurts like hell... Its better when nursing...but since Im back to work I pump at least 3x's/day...
What will "heal" it and what will prevent it from happening...

I had issues at one point... i found that the evenflo nursing pads with the lanolin built in were SO much better because they didnt rub as much and irritae me..... if i had a rough day i would also add a dab of cream on the pad as well as use the lanolin spray on the horns of the pump

I use "earth Momma angel baby- nipple butter". I found it on a little rack at BRU.
I use that because, I am allergic to wool. I read somewhere that Lanolin is made from animal products and it may irrate women who have wool allergies.
I asked my LLL leader about it and she said it was true and told me about the Earth Momma Angel Baby stuff.
The few times that I got a bit sore, I put some one for a day or so and it was much better.

Are you pumping too hard? That happens to me when the setting is too high. Doesn't hurt while it's pumping, but later, OUCHY, and it gets all cracked and red.

Your horn thingy (the cone lol..I dno the real name) might be too small. THis happened to me too..I went 2 sizes up and the pain went away.

I pump on the highest setting, but it hurts that one nipple regardless. How would I know if its my horn? Also my nipples are very white afterwards- why?

Re: OUCH!!!!- Pumping moms, what am I doing wrong?
Two suggestions:
Do you have the suction up too high (if you can control the suction on your pump)? Maybe turning it down a little will help.
Are the flanges the right size? I just bought my first electric pump (I used manual with my DD & for the first few months with DS) & I am probably going to have to get larger flanges. This picture shows a general idea of what it should look like if the flange fits correctly.
Other than that, you may just have to get used to pumping. Try Lansinoh cream for the cracking in the meantime.

that was going to be my first suggestion. you have to go by nipple size, not breast size. try that, and definitely don't use the highest setting - as long as you are producing enough milk, the pump will get it out. pumping at a higher setting won't make it work "better" - and it gets painful!
