Our Beach Camping Trip on Assateague Island
Back from beach camping at Assateague Island in Maryland...it was sweet!!!!!!
For couples and families with kids, this is a really nice activity vacation!
There are wild ponies and they are so fascinating to watch.
Here's some stuff we did...there are so many activities...crabbing, clamming, canoeing, a walk at dusk/campfire talk with park rangers. The park rangers are the greatest and they give talks about every activity. We didn't get a chance to do bike rentals/riding or trail walking.
We went into Ocean City for dinner at a crab house!!!! We sat dockside at Bahama Mama's. Great atmosphere. DH had 9 huge crabs. I had 3. It was fantastic!
Here are some pics.
- Camp sites on the beach. Ours is the blue one in the front left. - The facilities...luxurious...haha!!! - The sand is not that comfortable to sleep on, but it's more comfortable than soil!!!

- The ponies live naturally on the island. A foal and her mama.

Re: Our Beach Camping Trip on Assateague Island
- You wade into the knee-deep bay to go clamming. It was muddy. You can use your feet to feel around for clams. I was really good in the beginning, then I got pinched...I think by a crab and got FREAKED OUT!!!!! - DH was very persistent, though, and found 1 clam! My HERO!!!!!!!!! DH steamed it up. It was delicious!

Re: Our Beach Camping Trip on Assateague Island
- At dusk, we saw some families of ponies speed from the bay-side to the ocean-side. The rangers said they do this to get away from the biting flies and mosquitoes. - The rangers took us on a walk at dusk and for campfire tall tales.. (sharks and ghost stories). - DH and I at sunrise...our bodies so achy after sleeping on packed sand.
That's all I got! Image Attachment(s):

I've wanted to go there since I read Misty of Chincoteague (or however it's spelled). Looks amazing.

Re: Our Beach Camping Trip on Assateague Island
Thanks, everyone!! It was a very cool and interesting trip.
You can reserve a camp site online ahead of your trip. They have nice maps of the camp sites/island layout.
I definitely want to read Misty of Chincoteague, now!
