Our CD organization project! (aka how we spent our friday night!)

So we were overflowing with cds. We tried zipping them to a hard drive but I did NOT want to then get rid of them. But they took up sooooo much space. I said binders. DH said no. Then DH agreed. We researched, scoured for different capacity binders, nice covers, etc. Finally, we found our inspiration:

from rearrangeddesign.com

as well as such treasures

So we found the sleeves at microcenter. 50 double sided sleeves for 2.99. see here
We trekked over to ikea for the boxes. We got the kassett cd boxes 2 for $3.99
kassett

And then we got to work. For the record, we had over 350 cds and spent about $35 dollars in total. It took about 2 and a half hours. We did keep a few extra jewel cases for traveling as well as a few boxed sets together.

We organzied them as follows:
soundtracks/genre music (you know, soft hits from the 70's, shakin' hits from the 50's!) Yellow
Classical/New Age/ World Music Purple
Jazz/Swing/Big Band Green
Male/Female singers (see the blue and pink)
Bands (multi)

Great idea! I think you've inspired me to add the liner notes to my binders and toss the cases.

So when you put them all into these sleeves, did you toss the jewel cases that the CDs came in?

Still trying to figure this part out. Chat Icon We saw a cute idea where you can make mini dry erase boards with them by putting white paper in it. I will save some for my classroom to do that.

I also read that indie bands might want them for cds. I don't know of any indie bands. So I'm looking to get rid of them but not in a garbage way. I'm still trying to see if they are recyclable (sp).

Please keep us updated on what you did with them. I have a lot of empties sitting in my cabinet!

Re: Our CD organization project! (aka how we spent our friday night!)

I have to bump this thread because I have been doing this project this weekend (Thanks S!!!) and I have been having the best time ever doing it!

All of these CD's that I have been repacking are basically the soundtrack to my husbands' and I falling in love in 1997 and I have been doing this in front of the CD player, so everytime I come to a good disc, I played it and we sang along, and the best part is that my 5 year old son LOVED it, and he danced and just got all giddy when his Dad and I were laughing over the pop music!

My collection isn't particularly well organised, but I have been having a blast doing this!

Re: Our CD organization project! (aka how we spent our friday night!)

Love this! I have a ton of CDs that are taking up space. I still buy CDs b/c I prefer them to downloading music. I just don't need them all on a shelf anymore.
