Our dog died tonight-How do I explain this to Miranda?
I have no idea how to make her understand about Lily dying? Will she even get it? What a rough night. It was very sudden and unexpected so it's not like she knew Lilly was sick. Help!

I'm so sorry to hear that, what a terrible loss.
I would just be honest in a 3 year old kind of a way, that the dog went to heaven and is in a better place.

I don't agree, no offense. Then she'd want to GO to the farm, etc.
I'd tell her that Lily got very sick and she passed away and that means she went to heaven and is in a better place with treats and everything that she loves.
I'm sorry for your loss

I agree with being honest. My dog is very old, and I'm going to have to have this conversation relatively soon, too...
We had it with DS about a year ago when our cat died. It's important to let them understand that just because your pet died, doesn't mean that Mommy and Daddy are going to die soon, too. Sometimes the "he died because he was old" can be twisted into "but Mommy, you're old. Are you going to die, too?" After getting over the "you're old, too" comment..... it's important to let them know that animals are different than people.

Re: Our dog died tonight-How do I explain this to Miranda?
Sorry about your loss! When my cat died my son went with me when we took her to the vets office. We told him she wasn't coming home etc, but every once in a while he still asks about "the eeyow at the doctor" he hasn't really noticed she didn't come home.
Good luck! I don't personally think that kids really can grasp the concept of death.

Re: Our dog died tonight-How do I explain this to Miranda?
I'm so sorry I know this will be coming quickly upon us with our pets and/or grandparents and am really dreading the conversation.
As it is, I've had to have several conversations with Alex already about why Grandpa is always in the hospital - my policy is always honesty, but framed in a way that isn't scary to her. I just tell her that grandpa is geting old and sometimes that means he's more sick than the rest of us.
Good luck

I agree completely, I think the whole "farm" or saying they "went to sleep" is a bad idea. Be honest. Tell her that Lily is in heaven and will watch over her

In just think 3 is too young to explain death. Sorry for your loss....I would just have to say he went to the farm....im sure there are some good books for this....so sad, sorry!

Re: Our dog died tonight-How do I explain this to Miranda?
Thanks everyone. DH is staying home today. He is VERY upset (it was really his dog). I'm sure together we'll figure out a way to explain to her what happened and she'll have to understand the best a 3 year old can I guess.

I'd tell the truth. Tell her that dogs don't live as long as people and it was her time to go but doggy is watching her from heaven.
There are a few children's books on the topic too. "When a Pet Dies" by Fred Rogers I've heard is a good one.
